The UV-5R Mini pair stands out as a very cheap way to get into handheld ham radios, especially with USB C charging and a price that is usually below what a single UV 5R costs. The radios can receive NOAA weather, FM, and even aviation frequencies, and CHIRP programming works well for setting up repeaters and simplex channels. They are useful as backup units or starter radios for new technician license holders. The main caveats are that transmitting requires the proper license, and the mini variant can have weak filtering, occasional squelch lag, and stock antennas that are worth replacing.
The pair price is positioned as unusually low for getting started with UV-5R Minis, especially with USB-C charging included.
CHIRP programming software works well for setting up these radios.
The radios can receive NOAA weather broadcasts and FM radio stations for listening without transmitting.
The radios have been used during Helene to hear rescue and responder activity on rescue channels.
Some UV-5R Mini units can show dirty transmission harmonics, which can create interference risk.
The receiver can be overwhelmed by nearby strong signals due to limited RF filtering, which can reduce single-signal rejection.
Programming on the fly can feel clumsy, slow, and frustrating, and the radios lack native GPS/APRS capabilities.
Stock antennas may be poor enough to replace with aftermarket antennas costing about $20 to $50 each.

For around $100 you can get a lower end Yaesu, ICOM, or Alinco radio, which will offer filter circuits. (They're also easier to program usually, and better built (usually Mil-spec). Sound quality is far better on them also.
