the Arturia KeyLab Essential mk3 49-key is purely a MIDI controller — it does not produce sound on its own and requires a computer to function. Here's what that means:

No built-in sounds: It sends MIDI signals to your computer, which then generates audio through software (DAW or virtual instruments)

Computer required: Compatible with PC (Windows 10) and Mac — no standalone operation

USB-powered: Connects and draws power from your computer via USB Type-C

Software generates the sound: The included Analog Lab, Ableton Live Lite, UVI Grand Piano, and NI The Gentleman Piano all run on your computer.

Customers confirm this in reviews — "Easy to setup, just plug in to computer and launch your DAW."

A computer isn't the only way - Any hardware synth that takes MIDI input (most anything built in about the last 40 years) can be driven by this controller. I use mine for both software synths as well as my Behringer Model D, 2600 and Solina. I have the Mk1 version and it's a great keyboard. Hard to beat for the price.

If you are looking to drive a multi-synth setup, especially if you are going DAW-less, you may want to put this money toward a KeyStep Pro.
