Side sleepers will want a 3" (or if you can find it, a 4".) I'm a big guy, so I got a 4" myself, and haven't looked back!

Are toppers soft or firm? How to tell when buying?

I think when they are tall, it's softer and when they are thin, it's firmer.

I was always told toppers need to be a minimum of 3" to have any effect at all

This isn't actually "Memory Foam" which is a specific brand/type of proprietary foam. It is just regular random kind of foam that behaves sort of like Memory Foam but not nearly as well, and it isn't as durable or soft as real Memory Foam so this will start to rip and develop a low spot in the center a lot sooner. It does work decently well at first though, so if you aren't obese and you climb into bed carefully without poking into the foam, it will last a year or two before noticing low spots or rips. If you are obese it may start ripping within days or weeks depending on how obese you are.

There is no standard of measurement for this metric, so it is luck-of-the-draw what you get especially depending on which random brand you buy. Most are around medium firmness but it can vary greatly. Cheaper ones tend to be less dense which means there is less material so those tend to feel softer but are also less durable. That's what I've found after trying a few different cheap toppers like this over the years. All said they were Memory Foam but none actually were. None lasted more than 2 years before ripping/crumbling/developing a low spot and I'm only 140lbs and I'm very careful getting in and out of bed so I don't put all my weight on 1 hand and press down into the topper. 99% of people aren't as careful so most people will have more issues with durability than me.
