You should install and use a dedicated smaller 'tube faucet' to connect to the filter system and that way the filters will last 100x longer, as the filters are then filtering only the water that truly needs filtration.
It depends, and also so what? RO water is for drinking and cooking, neither of which constitute a significant portion of a home's water use (1-2% is typical). The best residential RO systems will do around 1:1, meaning they dump one gallon for every gallon of filtered water, while the worst will do around 10:1. Even with the worst system you're still using less water than for flushing toilets, watering plants, etc, and it's way cheaper and easier than bottled water.
Course, at the risk of stating the obvious, if you're happy with the taste of tap water it's even cheaper to just use it straight from the tap. I find the taste out where I live to be undesirable, and the increase on the water bill amounts to little more than a rounding error.
I'm sorry, what? I only addressed the amount of waste water, I said nothing of plastic or other waste.
That said, the amount of plastic in the filters is minuscule compared to the plastic that would be used to package 1000 gallons of water, and 1000 gallons is a low ball estimate of filter life.

1. Booster pump: Increases the water pressure coming into the whole RO system and fills the tank faster. Needs an outlet and uses some electricity. Biggest gain if your home water pressure is low to start with.
2. Permeate pumps: Genius device, huge reduction in waste water, no electricity needed. Uses the system's water flow to isolate the RO membrane from tank back-pressure so clean water can more easily push through the membrane.
You can use one or both pumps. Good water pressure plus a permeate pump should bring your water waste ratio from 10:1 down to around 2:1 or 1:1.
