I've had the 4 for 2 years now. So amazing , I like it better than the pocket 3 which is fragile , and need a good case for that one . This one has taken tumbles and gone deep under salty water still going strong

Does this require an app to control? Or can you just use the camera without having to use an app?

No. The only benefit I see the 5 over 4 is the built in storage and longer recording run time which you're better off just buying an extra battery and bigger sd card. For the image sensor, a quick Googling tells me it has better light sensor but i feel like it's a marketing jargon where improvement is only on paper. Even then, how often do you record at dusk? Action 4 still does pretty good at daytime under shadows so use case for next gen cmos is very limited.

No it doesn't require the app, but I think you do have to register it under an email with the app first iirc. But no I barely use the app at all. Love this camera.

The difference is quite noticeable when light drops off, even slightly. No need to google specs when there are dozens of reviews, comparisons, and YouTube videos.

With all that said, its not worth going from the 4 to 5 Pro.

Also, look around for deals on the Xtra Edge Pro. it's the same device with a different color scheme. i bought mine brand new/sealed on FB marketplace for $120.

It depends. Action 5 has noticeably better low light performance than the 4, and it has noticeably better quality 10 bit d-log m footage. It also has built in storage and allows connection of two mics simultaneously vs only one for the action 4. If you shoot in low light a lot, or if you shoot in 10-bit log and adjust your footage in post, or if you shoot two person interviews, then the 5 is worth the upgrade, though you may want to consider the action 6 as it has an even larger square sensor and open gate. If you mainly shoot in good lighting and normal footage, and don't need dual wireless mic capability, don't bother upgrading from the 4.

i'd say my action 4's low light is already good

I managed to get one of these for 150$ at target. I assume they priced it incorrectly and meant to reduce the 4 to this price.
