It's probably wise to think of these devices as being expendable. They are cheap, but they likely have a moderate early failure rate. That means a good mindset is to purchase items that minimize the future burden if you have to replace it. For this specific type of device, the rectangular shape is convenient. But I'm not sure that it is standardized at all. This means that it might be difficult to find a replacement or upgrade in the future.

What does seem to be somewhat standardized are circular grommet inserts. There are several popular sizes. But, there are common ones. And being circular, you are just matching one dimension (diameter) instead of 2 for a rectangle (LxW).

Search Amazon for "grommet power outlet" for examples of what I'm talking about. You can pick a size/diameter that works well for you. Then cut one or multiple holes at once for your desk. Each hole can be covered with a clean, blank plastic insert when it's not being used.

In addition to dropping in a AC/USB power adapters, these holes have a few other functions. One popular option are using them for cable management. Having a few tidy holes allows you to drop cables below to the underside of your desk. Another option is to attach monitor arms/stands. While you can usually clamp these onto the backside of your desk, another option is to clam the monitor stand through the grommet hole.

TL;DR: This probably works fine. But using a similar option that fits a circular grommet hole might be better long term.

My OCD over up-facing power outlets would not accept this.

Just begging for crumbs and other detritus to build up, maybe even bits of something conductive, and because it has no certifications, fire hazard++!

Can this be plugged into a surge protector? I assume it would not be safe.
