This Tapo 2K pan and tilt camera stands out for flexible coverage, strong night vision, and broad integration with Home Assistant, RTSP, and ONVIF. It can save pan and tilt positions, run patrols, and even stream to NVR setups like Frigate or Synology Surveillance Station. The app includes privacy mode and monitoring controls, but privacy mode is not a true power off, so a smart plug or switch is needed for full shutdown. Motion tracking can also chase trees and bushes in the wind, making placement and detection zones important. A capable wired camera with useful extras for tinkerers and home security setups.

Common Questions (4)

  • It does not have a built-in physical off switch, but monitoring/recording can be disabled in the Tapo app. For a true power-off, use a smart plug or smart switch on the camera's power; privacy mode only blocks audio/video and is not the same as cutting power.

  • Yes. Motion tracking can lock onto wind-blown trees and bushes even when people detection is enabled, because tracking requires motion tracking to stay on. Custom detection zones and careful camera placement or angle can help, but they do not fully eliminate the issue.

  • Yes. The camera supports RTSP and ONVIF Profile S, so it can stream to Home Assistant, Frigate, Blue Iris, and other NVR setups. RTSP uses a camera account and stream1/stream2 URLs, and ONVIF uses port 2020; cloud, SD card recording, and NVR/ONVIF use cannot all run at the same time.

  • It has strong low-light performance, with one user seeing over a hundred stars in the frame and another using it as an all-sky/night-sky camera. Audio pickup is also strong enough that a porch-mounted unit reportedly captured conversations from about 75 feet away.

I bought this last time, but they have no off switch. That's really annoying.

You can turn off monitoring/recording from the tapo app. If you need physical off, put a smart switch on the camera's power.

Curious as to why you need an on-off switch? I have multiple wifi/local security cameras of multiple different brands and none of them have an on-off switch. As mentioned, you can turn off recording and/or monitoring in the app. Far from perfect but the Tapo app is much better than most IMO.

I bought this model and I love it! What totally shocked me was, I placed one of these camera's on porch, and you can set different direction to point at location. I saw a few people talking about 75 feet away, and I was able to pick up their conversation. Shocked, if I was on porch, I wouldnt be able to hear what they said, but this beauty ... let me know what they said. For 25 dollars a piece, it works for me.

You mean the big blue button you tap to enable privacy mode? It's literally on the main page when you open the app

Privacy mode, does not mean off. Look at any cell phone.

It is a security camera. Why do you need an off switch?

It's possible to integrate these into Home Assistant and then wall them off from the internet. If you're savvy enough to have a VLAN or router that can cut these off from the web and set up Home Assistant, then they're a fantastic deal!

These look really nice. I tried to convince my wife to switch from wyze to these, but wyze is familiar and we are already invested in their ecosystem. (Though tapo and kasa are what we use for plugs).

That's pretty awesome and not an option with stuff like Wyze

Agreed, I like the app. I have a bunch of Kaza stuff. This is my camera from them. In home applications, I want to be able to turn it off so it's not watching me, even though it says "private" everyone knows that means nothing. Also good to have it off to save energy versus always on but in "private mode".

That is a good idea, thanks. It is more money to do but would work.
