First step is testing your water, below is a free basic test that will be enough for most people. You'll have search for a company that does better testing and pay $100-200 depending on what contaminants if you want more info.

2nd- this kit is not that good, you can build your own for better and more importantly better suited to what your water has in it that needs removing. This kit has 2 - 5 micron sediment and a carbon block.
Note: 20x 4.5 filter assemblies are universal, buy filters from anywhere, that are reputable. I use membrane solutions.
Note: filters do not replace water softners, if you have hard water a softer is needed, the electric coil type that wrap around the pipes don't work.
Also I know we hate AI chat, but this is a good use for it, plug your water report in and ask for filter advice or speak to a filter co. Ispring has a great CS to walk you through designing your system.
Ex. of a system: my well water was hard, had high tds, slight manganese can't remember what else.
I did a spin down filter, 1 micron PP filter and a carbon block, then a fine mesh water softner. I change my filters twice a year.

Hopefully I've helped, remember RO systems waste water they reject 3-5 gallons down the drain for ever gallon made! Only filter out what you need to!
You are right about water softening. It can be complex because the harder the water, the more softening you need... but over-softening water is worse than hard water. H2O will naturally absorb some amount of metals as it moves through an aquifer. It releases these metals when it's heated, causing scale, which damages water heaters, coffee makers and anything else that heats water. But if the water contains no metals (calcium or magnesium, usually), what will happen is the water will absorb metals. This is corrosion. While scale deposits calcium/magnesium from the water onto the heating elements, corrosion leaches metal from the heating elements into the water. You can remove scale build up but you cannot put metal back which has been removed.
There are home water hardness testing kits which allow you to test your water hardness before and after.
