They take sd card. You don't need subscription for 99% of the features, only if you want to use cloud storage for extended storage you would need subscription

I was hoping I could somehow use an external drive on my router or some other way to save the data besides the SD cards. These SD cards are getting crazy expensive.

You can use homebase equivalent, multiple cameras connected to central storage

As of 7/8/26-Purchased the Tapo Doorbell 4K and Tapo Wireless SOLAR Security Camera...so far no problems, easy to set up, and most importantly, you do NOT have to pay for a subscription. Just insert your SD card. Unlike ARLO, you have to pay for a subscription.

Do not recommend, tapo solar cameras do not support RTSP for connection to other recording software.

Do these record continuously with the SD card? Or just on motion events?

How do you power them?

Motion activated recording. Battery charged by included solar panel.

You can use Tapo H500 Hub to record all cameras in one location. Attach a monitor to it or tv and always view live feed from all cameras, 4 at a time. Hub is currently $150 at Amazon but can go on Sale, but you also need to invest in SSD card depending on how many cameras you have vs. buying storage SD card for each camera which mght cost less this way. All recording will be inside your home vs. on cameras just in case camera is stolen, then you loose recording with it. Battery powered can't do 24/7 recording,
