Departure tax, JR Pass (trains), hotel prices, entry fees to tourist sites, etc -- pretty much everything related to tourism in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto has gone up in price over the past year.

Wow $209 LAX to JAPAN is madness
During pandemic, the round trip ticket was $200 from midwest to Japan but there was heavy restrictions on the entrance to Japan at the time. I thought about buying it.

The going flight is cheap but i am not seeing any cheap return flight. so it is likely that you will still be paying close to $1000 for the round trip.
I think you are right about that. Return flight from Japan to the US seems always a lot higher in price than going to Japan.\

I see returns on August and September for the same 260. So return 585.

Cheap flights for sure, but know that it's cheap for a reason. Tokyo in the summer is awful if you're not used to high heat and humidity. Think like 95 degrees weather with 95% humidity. Basically you're sweaty and sticky the moment you step outside and there will be mosquitoes to boot.
October is pretty nice though. Usually temps in the 70's and not humid.

Mostly just taxes/fees, very few areas charge more for attractions - I forgot which place it was, but one of the temples charged us a whooping 500 yen Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Social media has some exaggerations as to how "bad" it is
