Damn, thats a deal breaker IMO. Thats why the printer is so cheap: they make up for it by overcharging on proprietary labels. review: "Pretty standard little printer with easy to use application. Warning you can only use the companies labels which are double the price of what you can get otherwise. There is a qr reader on each set of labels. Small enough to take anywhere. I use it constantly and has printed 400 labels flawlessly."
Oh well. Ill go without a label maker like I have my entire life :/
So far I've been able to use the same rfid tag from the original spool on several refills (different model, same company though). I got the printer dirt cheap and they dont get any more of my money. Good enough for now.

Pretty clever, but how does this work? Presumably the QR code is printed at the beginning of a roll--do you just "re-tape it on" the beginning of each roll?Because if it's not that hard, into my basket this goes...

I stuck mine in the housing or in the center of a refill, the printer picks up on it. Its RFID. Not QR

the printer is tracking the number of prints for the RFID tag and if it's more than 300 plus prints it errors out saying it exceeded the number of prints for the roll
One of the best label printers out there but you can only use the proprietary paper and their upgraded software tracks the number of prints per RFID tag and if it exceeds 300 plus it errors out. For that reasons I had to buy another printer user interface is not at all good I'm not impressed with the battery

So the arms race begins! That's a clever fix of them. Now we (or rather those who are motivated, maybe me) just need to figure out the encoding of the RFID and how it's keeping track. Or, better yet, an enterprising Alibaba label seller would do well to crack this themselves.
