If you absolutely cannot fit its larger brother the 665C as your center speaker, this will do in a pinch, and at half the cost. They have the additional benefit of being SEALED designs (no rear ports) so you can push them close up against a wall if needed.

If you can fit the 665C as your center but can't do the JBL 680, 690, or 698 towers for L/R, this 625C can be turned vertically and used as L/R mains---the extra woofer provides indisputable "no replacement for displacement" benefits over its single woofer bookshelf brothers the 620 and 630, and is a no-brainer at this clearance price. So you could do 3 of them for $600...total steal!

Pretty much ANY 2/2.5-way MTM center speaker can be turned vertical and used as mains. Most speaker companies will never tell you that because they'd rather make more per-unit profit selling you pricier towers and bookshelf speakers, which is why these MTM speakers are almost always * marketed * as "center speakers" --- some notable exceptions are the Ascend 340SE2 and KEF Q6 Meta.

(Obviously they will need a subwoofer to get the low frequencies, just like 90% of any speakers.)

If you have space for 3, why not? Check the dimensions.

If you're in no hurry, I would suggest waiting to see if that Energy Classic deal comes back.
Cost you less than two of these but it's a 5.1 setup.
Highly reviewed and likely provides better performance since it includes a sub!

Or with a AVR for $599!

If you go with 3 as LCR as OP suggested then these are going to need a sub in most cases. They are not ported & they do not dig very deep. Displacement in a design is also provided by the port so that is a factor. That said if using subs then the sealed design removes all possibly of port leakage and chuffing. Id probably use about 80hrz as the crossover point for bass management with these. I've seen no independent measurements of this center but models in the line have ranged from below average to well above in measured performance. I have historically found JBL speakers to sound quite good even when some issues exist in the design. Typically I really like their horn designs with the fairly controlled dispersion they have more or less mastered. They sound good.

I would add, if you're stilling using the 520c or the ever popular RC263 alternative for a studio 5 series setup.
This is a better matching center than those two ime.

The 520c was such a glaring weakness, people switched to the closest matching alternative(RC263)which really wasn't ime.

As you can see just in here, this is pretty important/beneficial.
Getting 3 identical speakers is a significant benefit, main reason, they match sonically.
We are ultimately talking about the improvement of sound after all.

if you can spen a few bucks more, the Klipsch reference premier line has some good sales going and 96 dB vs. JBL with 85 dB so will need less power to drive them

any measurements for how bad the 665c and 625c performs off angle?

I have been looking for a new center speaker to replace a pioneer c22 that I'm very unhappy with but I don't understand why so many center speakers have awful off axis performance. Like how does ascend acoustics pull off those great looking off axis measurements on the HTM-200SE2 without being a 3-way design?
