These are some good starter sets. Please note that these affordable sets, while made of German steel, are fabricated in China. If you require German-made knives, you must step up to the more expensive Zwilling knives. There's currently a sale of factory seconds, which include some Zwilling knives:

This Henckels Forged Premio set is a forged, budget-friendly starter knife set that aims for solid everyday performance and a premium feel at a low price. The German steel and full forged construction get the most praise, and long-term ownership reports say the blades can stay very sharp for years with basic maintenance. The included sharpener is a bonus for some, though it is also described as rough on fine edges. The main caveat is origin and positioning, since the line is described as made in China rather than Germany, with the single figure logo marking the value tier. A practical pick for basic home cooking if you are not chasing German-made blades.

  • The included free sharpener can help make the overall package feel like a good deal with a coupon.

    LavenderDime307SaltyOne

  • The knives are reportedly forged rather than stamped, which supports a solid feel for the price.

    odysseus1001winstoon

  • The set can work well for occasional home cooking when buyers want a budget starter option.

    SKV4mJMBFlorida

  • The set can keep a near-razor edge for months with periodic sharpening and daily dishwasher use.

    BrianC6347

  • The set is reportedly fabricated in China even when it is described as German steel.

    softrideroperl8mail

  • The German-made expectation can be misleading because Henckels International lines are described as not made in Germany.

    l8mailDanzilla

  • The free sharpener can damage or dull an edge instead of sharpening it properly.

    jack87

  • The knives may feel uncomfortable for small hands, which can affect day-to-day handling.

Speaking of Cutco, can confirm they stay sharp. Cut myself pretty deep a few days ago washing one. So 1/10 experience, but 10/10 sharpness. Cut so cleanly I didn't even need stitches
yep, my mom still got some after 25yrs+ still sharp. I do wonder if the quality is still there.

I heard that now it's basically: 1 dude on logo = cheap budget knife. 2 dudes on logo = German made

What in the world happened to this brand? When I used to sell Cutco knives Henckels was known as one of the best in the market, wtf is now trash? Are they in financial trouble, How do they even make a profit like this when they used to sell for hundreds of dollars
They still make some excellent knives but they're under the Zwilling name, not Henckels with the single-dude logo. They've found it profitable to go hard on the low end of the market, apparently.

I always thought this, but came across a set recently with 2 dudes logo but said made in Spain. The Spain knives originally used to be the budget set but now that seems to be the middle tier and the China ones are now the budget. Where its made is always on the blade so just double check before purchase so not surprised when you get them home.

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between German and Chinese. seems good enough for an occasional roast and ribeye. that retail price tho 😂

I've had this design in the block for 16 years next month. If you take care of them, they'll last you a very long time. Buying to replace shears (plastic button fell off the hinge on one side) and and get the utility knife and the serrated one (that one got lost ten years ago).

I've got small hands, it's been hard to find something comfortable. I use a budget set of Henckels (one stick figure) for almost everything. They lasted about 8-10 years before needing replacement (hand wash only). The set I use has 4 knives and was only about $20.

Would this fit in a generic knife block, such as this?

Man, i would love to get these, but I have three knife sets on the counter now. If I buy another, the family may decide to use the set on me!
