These are some good starter sets. Please note that these affordable sets, while made of German steel, are fabricated in China. If you require German-made knives, you must step up to the more expensive Zwilling knives. There's currently a sale of factory seconds, which include some Zwilling knives:

They still make some excellent knives but they're under the Zwilling name, not Henckels with the single-dude logo. They've found it profitable to go hard on the low end of the market, apparently.

I always thought this, but came across a set recently with 2 dudes logo but said made in Spain. The Spain knives originally used to be the budget set but now that seems to be the middle tier and the China ones are now the budget. Where its made is always on the blade so just double check before purchase so not surprised when you get them home.

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between German and Chinese. seems good enough for an occasional roast and ribeye. that retail price tho 😂

I've had this design in the block for 16 years next month. If you take care of them, they'll last you a very long time. Buying to replace shears (plastic button fell off the hinge on one side) and and get the utility knife and the serrated one (that one got lost ten years ago).

I've got small hands, it's been hard to find something comfortable. I use a budget set of Henckels (one stick figure) for almost everything. They lasted about 8-10 years before needing replacement (hand wash only). The set I use has 4 knives and was only about $20.
