Haven't used this alphabet soup company's version, but I've been part (more like a victim) of a rollout of a similar item to an entire team. Ours attached to the screen, and we were the lab rats testing a higher up's fascination with this gizmo gadget. If they worked for our team, then EVERYONE was going to get a set.
Screen hinge repairs spiked --- every person on the team needed a hinge repair before a year was up. Avoid that style unless you enjoy lighting your money on fire. To each their own...!

It seems this model rests on surface behind laptop

Indeed it does -- at least someone learned from the mistakes of previous products. This one is probably a lot better -- but when you factor in the extra bulk, it's just easier to carry around two normal portable monitors. And stick with well-known brands like LENOVO or ACER -- never heard a single good thing about these alphabet soup companies on Amazon.
It would've probably been an entirely different outcome for my team if we used this product, instead of that clamp-on product, aka HingeBreaker2000...!

Honestly, you would be better off doing a DIY setup with some folding magsafe laptop attachments and two, easily replaceable $40-$60 portable monitor deals that have been so frequent over the last year. Buying something like this is asking for issues

That may be true but the photos are a little lacking. Some photos make it look like this is not attached to the laptop in any way but others make it look like it is. The review photos aren't that helpful either since most appear to be for entirely different products. If it is entirely freestanding I would think there would be 0% risk to the laptop.
