how's this stuff work if it's mixed with water? do the ants take it back to colony somehow?

Yes, spray it in crevices indoors, and the ants will carry it back and spread it throughout the colony. It is invisible to them, so they simply walk through the treated areas. They die when they begin grooming themselves and indirectly ingest the poison. Please read the label for more info. Highly toxic to bees, so don't use outdoors if you can.

When spraying, no one should be in the area including pets for at least 2 hrs, overnight even better. I spray at night. In the morning, it will be dry, and safe for everyone. Again, please refer to the label. I'm not a professional. I got tired of using Terro and other baits. This one eliminated my ant problem. Use the Home Depot sprayer and mix maybe just 1/2 gallon at a time, 5 grams of Alpine WSG. This is plenty. It's half the packet. Save the leftover granules in a cool place. You will need a kitchen scale to measure. Outside perimeter, spray with Ortho Home Defense.
