i wouldnt get this. I would opt for something with a lightweight wood handle. The whole point is to free up weight so the head can do all the work. By adding weight to the handle and wrecking the balance instead of letting the head do the work you'll be letting your wrists do the work.

I have one and it's great. Is it the "smart design"? No. But it will outlast me and is generational level durable

It's leather with a polyurethane coating. They feel great in the hand.

Great solid Axe at this price. Have this one and the Fiskar 14" and use both for small firewood. This one is by far sturdier and weighs a little more than the Fiskar so I end up grabbing the Estwing most of the time.

Same deal with framing hammers, the solid ones hurt compared to the hickory and fiberglass handled ones.

Love this one. Just feels and looks good. I did rough up the handle a bit as it's slick with the polyurethane coating. I may end up sanding more of the coating off and exposing more of the leather. It's a tool.

i've had this same axe for over 40 years, no exaggeration. the polyurethane is all cracked and the blade is pretty dull, but at least back then, they made these things to last forever!

Wrong. This is one of - if not the best low cost off the shelf hatchets you can buy. The weight, balance and grip are perfect. Made in America as well
