This stainless steel pig tail flipper is a specialty grilling tool best suited for turning ribs, tri tip, pork butts, and other large cuts that are awkward with tongs. It is praised for giving faster, more controlled flipping and for making bigger pieces easier to handle, especially on a smoker or during searing. The main caveat is that stabbing smaller cuts can squeeze out juices, and the tool may need to be beefier or sturdier for heavy use. A niche but useful grill accessory if you work with larger cuts often.

Common Questions (3)

  • Yes. It works well for flipping ribs, tri-tip, pork butts, and other large cuts, especially when tongs get awkward on pieces bigger than a steak or chop. It can also make turning larger roasts easier during searing.

  • For steaks and smaller pieces, tongs are often preferred. For ribs, skirt steak, tri-tip, and other large or awkward cuts, the hook-style flipper can give faster, stronger control than tongs.

  • It does puncture the meat, so it can squeeze out juices on small cuts. For larger cuts, that concern is less relevant, and some use it alongside thermometers without worrying about meaningful juice loss.

Decades ago there was a blacksmith doing some demo work at a fair, and for $20 he'd make one of these, choose right or left handed, about 20-22" long, even stamp your initials on it. Mine's still going strong after many many years of use. It's the perfect tri-tip tool along with a lot of other cuts.

For those of you clowning a specific type of bbq or tool crowd, go ahead and get over your small wieners. Pun (maybe?) intended.

One, it looks like a $7 item at most. Two, as someone said, you release the juices. If I want to do that, any grilling fork will probably serve me better. Stick to tongs
I use a coat hanger. You know, the cheap ones from dry cleaners

Great tool. I bought a similar one at the fair years ago and it works great. Can't comment on the price though.

Lol, calm down and show me on the doll where the barbecue hook hurt you ( I can probably guess.).

Anyway, every BBQ joint has these. I have a different brand in the same size that is excellent - faster and with more pulling power than tongs - for flash grilling skirt steak.

Yep, BBQ joints have them so they can quickly turn 600 slabs across several pits. People will get this tool just because it says Traeger on it and use it to flip their 2 slabs 28 times during a cook. LOL

So you stab the food and release juices to flip it
You missed the entire point...

It costs 1.5 cents to make and you sell it for $15.39.

And we call this capitalism at it's finest.

I got a different brand (more expensive, tho) for xmas a couple of years back and there *are* use cases for these, though I think they really need to be, uhm, "beefier" than this one to properly handle those big cuts and shapes that tongs aren't best suited for.

The set I got is longer and works pretty well, but I do wish it was more sturdy:
