If you are flexible then you can easily find better prices elsewhere. Costco just has certain specific novelties that are unique to them and their very liberal return policy definitely makes shopping there much nicer. Also goes without saying that their gas prices are the best around for premium gas.
But we shouldn't pretend like buying exorbitant amounts of goods unless you're explicitly shopping for a family of 6+ is better than just getting individual goods at same or cheaper prices elsewhere.
You can transfer the GC funds to your Costco account's Shop Card balance then save any Visa card for payment -- use the gas pump's QR code scanner to pay with the app and it'll use GC balance first then charge remaining to Visa card

Does anyone know if I buy the Groupon, can I wait till August 1 to redeem it for the Costco membership?
Edit: It doesn't appear so, as step one on Groupon shows that right after you make the purchase you receive a confirmation email with your membership number. Oh well, I guess it's worth getting now while the $10 additional savings is available, and give up the extra month of August.
The $50 digital Costco shop card promotion is only available online at costco.com right now using the promo code GOLDEN.
