You can transfer the GC funds to your Costco account's Shop Card balance then save any Visa card for payment -- use the gas pump's QR code scanner to pay with the app and it'll use GC balance first then charge remaining to Visa card

If you are flexible then you can easily find better prices elsewhere. Costco just has certain specific novelties that are unique to them and their very liberal return policy definitely makes shopping there much nicer. Also goes without saying that their gas prices are the best around for premium gas.
But we shouldn't pretend like buying exorbitant amounts of goods unless you're explicitly shopping for a family of 6+ is better than just getting individual goods at same or cheaper prices elsewhere.

It doesn't really matter since I didn't have anything critical in my order history. It might be an issue for someone with an account just over 18 months.

It reminded me why I hate Costco. BJ's and Sam's let you scan on your phone as you shop, then pay and bypass the line.
There's also the other people. Costco shoppers seem to be the most oblivious people who have no situational awareness or simply don't care that there are other shoppers. That's at least how it is in my area. The shoppers in BJ's and Sam's have manners. Costco attracts the BMW crowd who don't know what a turn signal is.

is this actually true in practice. i think i've heard of people in the past who have gotten these kind of discounted memberships after letting their membership expire and then renewing after a couple weeks or so
