Chevron Techron High Mileage is a fuel system cleaner aimed at older cars, especially for keeping injectors and the rest of the fuel system cleaner between maintenance intervals. It is described as useful for used cars, GDI engines, and vehicles that do not always run Top Tier gas, with some noting it can smooth rough running and is part of Hyundai maintenance schedules. The main limits are that it will not clean direct injection intake valves, and newer cars may not need the High Mileage version. Price is the other sticking point, with repeated calls that the deal is still too high and that similar bottles often sell for less.

  • Owners of older high-mileage cars with rough running, because it can clean up fuel-system deposits and restore smoother operation.

  • Drivers who skip Top Tier gas and want periodic injector cleaning, because the additive is more relevant when detergent is not already in the fuel.

  • Car owners who like to add a cleaner before an oil change, because it can be dumped in and run through the tank as part of routine service.

  • Hyundai drivers following scheduled maintenance, because it is recommended at specified intervals and appears in the 60k GDI maintenance window.

  • Direct-injection owners hoping to clean intake valves, because this product mainly helps injectors and does not reach the valves or plenums.

  • Drivers who already use Top Tier gasoline, because the detergent is already present and the additive may not be necessary.

  • Shoppers expecting a dramatic fix for every engine problem, because the improvement can be modest and may feel like a placebo.

  • Drivers of newer cars with little buildup, because the High Mileage formula may be unnecessary and can strip deposits that should stay.

People complain about additives and most are snake oil. This is one of the only lab-proven formulas. It doesn't help as much if you're habitually using top-tier gas...but I'm saving 40-50c/gal by using Murphy/Walmart and add this every few fillups. Still, this isn't a good deal.
I don't think you are supposed to use this more than twice per oil change. For most people, once right before each oil change is enough.

Detergent in fuel is exactly the reason why these are placebo.
BP, Amoco, Circle K, Love's, Pilot Flying J, Safeway, Sam's Club, Murphy's, 7-Eleven, Speedway, and many other gas stations do not sell Top Tier gas, so for a ton of drivers in the US, no, these are not a placebo at all.

You could argue other brands of fuel system cleaners with less effective, or lower concentrations of, detergents are placebos, but not the ones with high concentrations of PEA, like Chevron Techron, Red Line SI-1 and Gumout Regane.

Instead of buying half a gallon of discounted snake oil, do yourself and your car a favor and spend this money on a new fuel filter. Pretty much all gas in US is premixed with detergent.
If by "pretty much all gas in US" you mean gas not from BP, Amoco, Circle K, Love's, Pilot Flying J, Safeway, Sam's Club, Murphy's, 7-Eleven, Speedway, and many independent gas stations, sure...

Almost clicked to buy as a knee jerk reaction. Then I remember I don't drive a gas car anymore. Actually still have a few bottles in the garage.

BP and Amoco are on the Top Tier list:

Fuel filters are often located in the gas tank itself and can't be removed unless removing the tank.

Ah, thanks. They were removed from Top Tier list in 2022, but it looks like they just re-joined it this May.

Here's the truth about fuel system cleaners.
1) Top tier gasolines already have this so this shouldn't be necessary. What makes top tier gasolines qualify is that this exact same cleaner or something similar is already included in the gasoline in sufficient amounts to prevent buildup.
2) Top tier doesn't necessarily mean top price. Costco is top tier and is one of the cheapest gasolines you can buy.
3) If your system does get dirty due to the use of non-top tier gasoline, then this would be helpful.
4) Direct injection engine intake valves and intake plenums will not be helped by as this will not hit them. It will help on everything else.
Whats helps a direct injection engine?

Sam's Club has this for $40. Not the high mileage version. But not sure what the real benefit of the high mileage version does.
