yes, i buy used cars and this is just mandatory for used cars. many people are Clueless concerning car maintenance and probably everything else in life.
so this is my cheap let's fix this old beater up almost like new. change oil, trans fluid, air in tires, air filter, et al; assume people are almost brain dead and you'll get the picture. nothing much surprises me anymore, nothing. or take a chance and see what happens, and it will happen. YMMV.
Chevron Techron High Mileage is a fuel system cleaner aimed at older cars, especially for keeping injectors and the rest of the fuel system cleaner between maintenance intervals. It is described as useful for used cars, GDI engines, and vehicles that do not always run Top Tier gas, with some noting it can smooth rough running and is part of Hyundai maintenance schedules. The main limits are that it will not clean direct injection intake valves, and newer cars may not need the High Mileage version. Price is the other sticking point, with repeated calls that the deal is still too high and that similar bottles often sell for less.
Owners of older high-mileage cars with rough running, because it can clean up fuel-system deposits and restore smoother operation.
At about $7.50 per bottle, several comments call it overpriced, and similar bottles reportedly go on sale for about $5-$7 elsewhere. One tracker-based comment says this is the lowest price in 3 months, but it is still not considered a standout deal.
Top Tier gasoline already contains detergent, so the cleaner is less necessary if you always buy Top Tier fuel. It is more useful when you regularly use non-Top Tier gas or cheaper stations with less detergent.
It can help clean injectors and fuel-system deposits, but it does not reach direct-injection intake valves or plenums. Those valves typically need manual cleaning, often walnut blasting.
A common routine is to add one bottle before an oil change and run it through the tank. It is generally used no more than twice per oil change, and once per oil change is enough for most people.
It can clean up older, high-mileage engines and improve rough running when deposits are part of the problem. It is also recommended by Hyundai at specified maintenance intervals for some models, including GDI engines.
People complain about additives and most are snake oil. This is one of the only lab-proven formulas. It doesn't help as much if you're habitually using top-tier gas...but I'm saving 40-50c/gal by using Murphy/Walmart and add this every few fillups. Still, this isn't a good deal.
I don't think you are supposed to use this more than twice per oil change. For most people, once right before each oil change is enough.

Detergent in fuel is exactly the reason why these are placebo.
BP, Amoco, Circle K, Love's, Pilot Flying J, Safeway, Sam's Club, Murphy's, 7-Eleven, Speedway, and many other gas stations do not sell Top Tier gas, so for a ton of drivers in the US, no, these are not a placebo at all.
You could argue other brands of fuel system cleaners with less effective, or lower concentrations of, detergents are placebos, but not the ones with high concentrations of PEA, like Chevron Techron, Red Line SI-1 and Gumout Regane.
Instead of buying half a gallon of discounted snake oil, do yourself and your car a favor and spend this money on a new fuel filter. Pretty much all gas in US is premixed with detergent.
If by "pretty much all gas in US" you mean gas not from BP, Amoco, Circle K, Love's, Pilot Flying J, Safeway, Sam's Club, Murphy's, 7-Eleven, Speedway, and many independent gas stations, sure...

Fuel filters are often located in the gas tank itself and can't be removed unless removing the tank.
Here's the truth about fuel system cleaners.
1) Top tier gasolines already have this so this shouldn't be necessary. What makes top tier gasolines qualify is that this exact same cleaner or something similar is already included in the gasoline in sufficient amounts to prevent buildup.
2) Top tier doesn't necessarily mean top price. Costco is top tier and is one of the cheapest gasolines you can buy.
3) If your system does get dirty due to the use of non-top tier gasoline, then this would be helpful.
4) Direct injection engine intake valves and intake plenums will not be helped by as this will not hit them. It will help on everything else.
Whats helps a direct injection engine?
