I ordered this from Best Buy and I've had it for a few days. The sound quality is pretty good for the price, but I'm no audiophile. It doesn't have a battery, so it's not a portable CD player, it's more of a compact CD player that is easy to transfer. I use it in the living room with some powered speakers and then move it to my bedroom and use it with headphones. Its built-in headphone amp is able to power the Senheisser HD 600, so I don't need an external headphone amp. It comes with a manual, remote controller, and USB A to C cable. It does not come with a USB A power adapter and it needs 5v with at least 2amps. Make sure you order a USB A power adapter that's 5v with at least 2 amps if you don't have one. I use my iPad charger to power it up and it seems to work fine. It also doesn't come with an aux cable or optical cable, so you may want to pick some up if you need them.

Millennials grew up listening to CDs. It's Gen Z who are just now discovering them.

The year people are starting to realize that buying physical media once that you can own and play forever is preferable to paying eternal subscriptions to services that will gradually but inevitably get both more expensive and worse.

The Merak is a compact CD player that works especially well as a transport for a stereo system, with strong measured performance and good sound into an external DAC. The built in headphone amp can drive Sennheiser HD 600, and the one touch ripping feature writes WAV files directly to a USB drive without a separate PC. It includes a remote, manual, and USB A to C cable, but no USB power adapter, aux cable, or optical cable. The line output is described as stereo, though the built in DAC and headphone output are only so so, and coaxial output would have been preferred.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is strongest as a digital transport into a stereo system or external DAC, where it measures and sounds well. The built-in headphone amp and analog output are described as mediocre, so headphone use is better served by an external DAC/amp.

    Cujobobwildbird12Fry-man22

  • The line output is stereo, not mono. It can be used as a compact CD transport into powered speakers or a stereo system.

  • Yes. The one-touch ripping feature writes directly to a USB drive without a separate PC, and the output format is WAV, which is lossless and uncompressed.

    YwVJZXkD_karu_

  • It has no battery, so it is not a portable CD player. It is a compact mains-powered unit that can be moved between rooms, and it needs 5V at at least 2A from USB power.

    herromysterysock

  • It includes a manual, remote controller, and USB A to C cable, but no USB power adapter. It also does not include aux or optical cables, so those need to be bought separately if you need them.

"CD-RW (partially readable)" I don't know what that means, but can't you burn a new CD if it doesn't?

I mean you could if you don't mind what that would look like. Also doubt the sound quality would be that great and wouldn't you also need a sound card and power supply? Likely would have more than $119 into it.
