The Merak is a compact CD player that works especially well as a transport for a stereo system, with strong measured performance and good sound into an external DAC. The built in headphone amp can drive Sennheiser HD 600, and the one touch ripping feature writes WAV files directly to a USB drive without a separate PC. It includes a remote, manual, and USB A to C cable, but no USB power adapter, aux cable, or optical cable. The line output is described as stereo, though the built in DAC and headphone output are only so so, and coaxial output would have been preferred.

  • The Merak can function as a strong digital transport into an external DAC for CD listening.

  • The built-in headphone amp can drive Sennheiser HD 600 without needing an external headphone amp.

  • The one-touch ripping feature can write WAV files directly to a USB drive without a separate PC.

  • The player is compact and simple enough to move between a living room stereo setup and bedroom headphone use.

  • The Merak requires a 5V power supply rated at least 2A and it does not include a USB A power adapter.

  • The Merak does not include aux or optical cables, so extra accessories may be needed for certain connections.

  • The headphone output and analog outputs are described as mediocre, even though the transport performance is praised.

  • The one-touch ripping feature may produce incomplete track metadata unless internet lookup is available.

I have this, player hooked up to an external DAC (also Fosi), and it sounds great. Apparently the built-in DAC is so-so, but as a transport this player excels: This guy agrees and confirms what I am hearing - https://www.audiosciencereview.co...yer.71259/

in case anyone was wondering i had to look it up. the one click thing will write to a usb drive directly, no separate pc required. the format from what i could find is just wav, lossless/uncompressed. kind of neat. my 90s discman is still running smoothly though, not sure i'd really see an improvement for headphone usage

I think if one is going to hook this to a stereo and use it as part of a component system as the transport it's really nice.

If using it with headphones and adding another DAC and amp, from my bit of research it might be worth looking at the FiiO DM15. It has a better headphone amp, a battery, and a "better"(?) DAC but costs more and loses the 12v trigger.

This is not a CD-i player with an MPEG-1 decoder (and no, I don't think that is coming back despite how retro it now is).

The One-Touch ripping feature is interesting, however, without internet lookup, I assume the tracks would be without any information. My go-to is still Classic Windows Media Player to rip CD into my library.
Switch to Exact Audio Copy, you can rip in secure mode for the most accurate rips and get recent metadata from a couple different sites

Looks cool. I wonder about the metadata of the files when ripping?

Or just encode and add metadata after raw rip

Windows Media Player no longer downloads metadata from the internet. Microsoft shut that down.
Are there any alternatives that will do that? I have been contemplating ripping/re-ripping my CD library
