BougeRV's 23 quart 12 volt car refrigerator stands out as a compact travel fridge for road trips, tailgating, camping, and keeping drinks, formula, or even insulin cold without ice. It chills quickly, holds around 32 to 37 degrees in real use, and can run for hours from a small battery or a vehicle power source. The main caution is airflow, especially in a Model Y sub trunk, where keeping the lid open or using risers matters and extreme heat can hurt performance. It is also heavy, lacks a built in battery, and a few long term reliability issues were reported.

  • The fridge can maintain cold temperatures in a closed Tesla Model Y sub-trunk during 90°F days.

  • The unit can chill drinks quickly and hold around 32°F after being left in a vehicle.

  • Using a portable 12V power source can keep items cold or frozen without dealing with ice and melted ice.

  • The built-in cooler lid and structure can feel very strong for boat placement and added topper support.

  • Sub-trunk placement can require risers for air circulation and may still fail to keep food below 60°F in 100°F+ conditions.

  • Enclosing a powered cooler in a sub-trunk can increase power use and shorten compressor lifespan due to limited vent airflow.

  • The version without a built-in battery can take up extra SUV trunk space when paired with a portable battery cube.

  • Extended warranty coverage may be important for hot climates because compressor or circuit board failures have reportedly occurred.

Thanks op. hope it's durable
I bought one for my sailboat and the only place I could safely place it was where the built in cooler was. The cooler (Coleman style) was used by the manufacturer as the step down from the cockpit into the cabin. I was overly concerned about that because you are effectively standing on it for a moment. It's so well constructed and far stronger than the old cooler lid was. It's a little beast. I did construct a topper from 1/2" marine ply to distribute weight across the entire top, create a non-skid surface, and serve as a heat absorber from being in direct sun. I used 3m 4200 as the adhesive, just to the actual lid. I weigh 250 and it is rock solid. It's been a complete game changer for my boat life.

Is this the model that has an actual compressor?
Yes, it actually has a compressor, evaporator, condenser & uses freon (R134 in this application) like a "real" fridge

How cold does this get? I do a lot of 2 day events and ice is hard to get and leaves less room for drinks and such.

This thing is awesome. We use it for formula bottles in the bedroom for nighttime and early feeds for the baby. My wife went from saying "why did you buy this" to "this is the best thing ever" 😂
I didn't buy this exact model, but when my wife was nursing our youngest (2 mo at the time), we took a long road trip in our Honda Odyssey. Our refrigerator replaced the middle section of the second row bench seat. My wife was in the 2nd row, passenger side, as the snack captain. She was getting milk from the fridge and pouring it into a portable kettle plugged in the front. We heated it to the preset formula temp, then put it in a bottle that she could feed him with. He was in the driver's side of the second row. Our other two kids were in the 3rd row. It was a perfect set up all the way from AL to PA.

Aside from the convenience of not dealing with ice, is there any advantage of this over an ice chest? Seems like the utility of this drops if you run out of power, but an ice chest could be constantly refilled.

Seems this has been discussed quite a bit in this thread. I recommend starting at the first post and reading on.....

Not helpful. I am asking if anyone has the bigger 30qt version, not the 23qt version on this thread. No information about what I am asking for on this thread, google, youtube, and AI doesn't think it will fit. People on this thread have success with the 23qt version and some mentioned using raisers, the 30qt version has the same width and depth, and its a bit taller. So instead of getting the 23qt version and using raisers on the Model Y, would it work with a 30qt version which will cause the sub trunk to prop open allowing airflow?

If a smaller cooler wont work efficiently due to air flow issues then a large one certainly wont. A riser wont make a difference if the hot air cant escape the trunk without opening it to vent and even then may not be enough.

Is there any way to tie this down with straps anywhere? It doesn't look like you can strap through the handles.

One of the reasons I spent an extra 20 bucks on the CRPro version. Upgraded compressor, and small tiedown locations.

I got this during the last sale and will keep your drinks ice cold no problem. I have mine set for 37 degree's and its just as cold as stuff you get at the gas station. I managed to get eight 28oz gatorades and five 16oz water bottles in there standing straight up. The reason I bought this was to keep my insulin cold during a blackout so consider it for cold storage backup for meds and other important items.

It's durable but insulation is not as good as larger models. Condensation forms when your using freezer mode.

as for running out of power, thay all depends on your setup.

Ice chest makes stuff wet. it's also heavy.

you can't freeze stuff in ice. you can with this.

if you have enough electricity it's reasonably infinite in function

some solar panels and some storage and you can run this for weeks
