BougeRV's 23 quart 12 volt car refrigerator stands out as a compact travel fridge for road trips, tailgating, camping, and keeping drinks, formula, or even insulin cold without ice. It chills quickly, holds around 32 to 37 degrees in real use, and can run for hours from a small battery or a vehicle power source. The main caution is airflow, especially in a Model Y sub trunk, where keeping the lid open or using risers matters and extreme heat can hurt performance. It is also heavy, lacks a built in battery, and a few long term reliability issues were reported.

I have this in my model y subtrunk. You NEED risers for air circulation. I 3d printed some, but you can DIY anything to keep the subtrunk open so all the heat doesn't get trapped. Even with risers, when it was 100°+ outside it could not keep a fridge full of cold food below 60° when set at 38. That is with the AC in the car on, but the car in the sun. If you are going to use it in extreme heat the subtrunk won't work.
Is this is on an older non-Juniper Model Y? I have the Juniper and there sub-trunk has openings on both sides (this originally is to accommodate the folding shelf). I have my fridge in the sub-trunk and just make sure to not block those openings. So far it seems like it has been working fine. Although it does get quite warm back there

This is the most brilliant purchase you will ever make! Add whatever battery you like and you're keeping the cold things cold (or frozen). Mine is usually full of dairy or soda or water. Just depends on what we are doing. I don't have to deal with Ice and melted ice (sometimes condensation happens) but it pays for itself on adventures.
My wife is nearly the same - can't imagine being without it and finds it so useful but I'm pretty sure when I first bought it she was rolling her eyes. Lol

Did you 3d print risers or can you show us what you used please?

Thanks for the tip. Could you explain more about the risers? Do you mean risers under it to just keep it off of the floor? Or risers to raise and vent the Tesla floor panel that lays on top of it?

Been watching this for a little bit and finally pulled the trigger for the sub trunk of our Model Y. Looking forward to using it on a few trips and tailgating. Already plan to precool it the night before use on AC power and put in precooled food/drink for the best results I hear. Any other helpful tips appreciated.
Don't buy a toy a get something with a Dan Foss compressor

Just wish this version had a built in battery like the Anker's do... can't beat the price.. but this, plus a portable battery cube is taking up a lot of smaller SUV's trunks.
That's a different product altogether. https://www.amazon.com/BougeRV-Re...0GL1WHYYK/

I wouldn't put this (or any powered cooler) in the sub-trunk. Powered frigerators need a ton of air circulation around the vents to work properly.

The refrigerator is basically dumping heat out of the vents and then using that same ambient air to cool down the compressor. The warmer the ambient air, the harder your fridge has to work. You ideally don't want to put this in an enclosed space even with nothing blocking the vents. It may "work" but its not ideal and will lead to higher power consumption and shorter lifespan of compressor.

I've been using it on days when it's in the 90's, and it's been maintaining temps in the closed Model Y sub-trunk just fine. When I'm going into the grocery store, I open the subtrunk cover and turn on the fridge, and it's at temp by the time I'm done shopping. Then I load it and close the compartment cover and it maintains just fine on the way home, whether that's 15 minutes or 1 hour. I've done a few road trips (3-4 hours) with the compartment closed and it seems to be fine, and was still fully cold on arrival. The car's AC is always on too, maintaining the car at 68. Batteries aren't needed on the Model Y, the 18V plug can be set on the screen to stay on at all times.

Keep the subtrunk lid open when you can, but it's fine to close it for a few hours. I wouldn't leave it closed overnight. I'm confident it would continue to work even on a longer trip, just minimize time with the subtrunk closed as much as much as you can.
