I think doordash made a billion in profit last year. But that's not the point. The point is that any company that is operating should properly compensate their employees and not rely on their customers to make their wage livable. It's not about how much dd is making in profit on the order. The fact is, if the company can not afford to pay their drivers properly because they are running a $50 off $100 promo, then the company can not afford to run the promo.Tips are extra income. Your employer should provide enough for your lifestyle. If they don't, you either need to find another employer that pays for your lifestyle or the employer is lowballing and raking in cash that should be partially going to you. If you get some tips, those should go to retirement savings, rainy day funds or something frivolous because it's your money. Tips should not be needed to survive.
It's far more complicated than that. The people who complain about tipping will be people most hurt if tipping was removed. Generous people and those with means to do so subsidize those who do not tip well and don't have means to do so. Delivery works best when orders can be stacked together. Go ahead and remove tipping culture and they would have to charge you $10-$15 more than they already do to get your order delivered. This now prices some people out of the service. Now there are less orders and less economies of scale efficiencies. The more orders the less distance drivers have to do per order. The less time they have to spend going place to place (as they can shop multiple orders at a time if there are more orders). With less efficiencies the prices go even higher for the service. Not to mention no fed income tax on tips which introduces even more savings into the ecosystem. If everyone was actually charged what it costs to get items delivered would actually pay those increased costs. Then DoorDash would do it. Customers drive the culture not DoorDash or Uber Eats. This is the most efficient way to do it here in America. Due to American culture that a decent portion of society are generous tippers.
And what's wrong with a billion in profit for a company that size? Thats barely anything compared to other companies with that kind of footprint into American lives.

You are missing nothing. This is DoorDash's standard business model. Charge higher prices than store, add a bunch of taxes and fees, and make you pay a large tip.
Doordash doesn't set prices the merchant does

A business model should not rely on the fact that some people are generous tippers when calculating labor costs. If the service costs $20 more, then that's what it costs. You can either afford it or you can't. The company either has enough business to be profitable or it should not exist. The world was just fine before dd and grubhub came along, it's a luxury and should be treated as such. There were already food delivery companies designed to assist elderly and ADA people. To each their own, but it's cry me a river when attempting to justify the ridiculous pricing structure and low wages paid by a company with a net profit of over 900 million. Maybe they should have profited 500m instead, while also paying their drivers what they are worth for their time and effort.

Hey let me know when doordash finally hires drivers as employees then your rant would fit.

Also the merchant eats most of the discount cost.

Btw doordash does 900+ million deliveries a quarter. Puts things in perspective when talking about a billion in profit a year

"Dashers complete over 3 million deliveries per day. Explore DoorDash's 2025 report" from the dd website. Less than a third of your misinformation, but others are right. This has gotten way off topic. Long story short, to each their own. Enjoy.

They pay their drivers exactly what they're worth - what they're willing to accept.

It's a better world that they exist and it's not a luxury. It's a distribution and marketing platform for restaurants. Give it a rest - it's good for everyone in the economy

Use code DP50GROC for 50% off grocery order to any Kroger affiliated store. Use with a chase card to use your $10 benefit as well that stacks.

Duplicate sorry

I couldn't find $100 worth of grocery so I bought cat food. With the 20% off DD gc, I think I came out ahead of about $15. Better than nothing.
