edit: grab it now if you have yet to bask in the glory of the crypt keeper. I should not have watched this when I was a child but that theme song is amazing. The 4k info I had was actually the remaster they were adding seasons to AMC+ weekly.
Even if it did come out, it ain't going to be this cheap.I don't want to subscribe to another streaming service just to watch these. Finally, I don't mind the resolution. Makes it a little bit nostalgic
Tales From the Crypt is a long unavailable horror anthology that finally lands for purchase in SD, with the big draw being easy access to the full series and its unrated HBO-era content. The price works out cheaply per season, and the old-school presentation still carries nostalgic charm, with clean picture and audio on some screens. The main drawback is the resolution, which is widely described as true SD or 480p, sometimes with a 60 fps soap opera effect and long episode intros. It feels like a bargain for fans who can live with the format.
Viewers who enjoy nostalgic standard-definition TV, because the lower resolution preserves the old look and still plays clearly on a large screen.
Fans who want to own the series now, because it was unavailable for purchase for years and the current SD copy is still watchable with clean picture and audio.
It is clearly SD, but the picture and audio are described as clean and still watchable on a 70-inch TV. The tradeoff is that some viewers find the 480p look nostalgic, while others think it looks poor compared with HD.
The purchase is currently SD/480p, and the series is also described as 4:3 pillarboxed on modern TVs. An HD label appears on Apple, but the streaming version discussed here is still standard definition, with no confirmed 4K release for this deal.
A free upgrade is not something Fandango commonly provides for TV purchases, so an eventual HD update is not guaranteed to carry over at no cost. The safer assumption is that this SD purchase stays SD unless the storefront explicitly announces an upgrade policy.
The Fandango version is expected to include the unrated footage, meaning the profanity and gore cut from TV reruns. The separate concern is picture quality: the AMC+/Shudder restoration may not be the same as this purchase.
The series has been reported as available on Tubi, where it can be watched for free with ads. That makes the $19.99 purchase less compelling if you only want access and do not mind ad-supported streaming.
No, it has been reported to play with a 60 fps soap-opera effect instead of the original 24 fps film cadence. That smoother motion can make the show feel less cinematic and may bother viewers sensitive to frame-rate changes.
for those who just bought this, your wasted your money as it's now on tubitv for free
Tubi won't have it free for long or on its app it will definitely disappear so buying to just having for a limited time people that want it will buy it to keep on their movie log

Not even close, Tubi you have to mute all the ads. Congratulations to the people who are actually purchasing this! Looks decent on Tubi. If it was HD, I would insta-purchase. Still thinking about it at SD, but I wish it was on Apple so at least you would have a possibility of getting a free upgrade.

I just got it and it looks pretty good for being SD.
Unfortunately on Fandango free upgrades are rare. And Ive almost never had a free TV upgrade.
Only two out of the hundreds we have were ever upgraded (HDX to 4K). Not sure how or why they were chosen. But they were not SD like these.

Yea maybe you want to spend $20 on the crapshoot they will some day. But SD is absolutely horrible on the viewing. I have a couple SD tv series and I regret buying them. Ten minutes in and I turn it off.
Google says "Due to the lack of an official studio restoration, fans and archivists have taken preservation into their own hands. The 1080p and 4K AI-upscaled fan edits that circulate online offer a massive upgrade to the picture quality over the standard-definition DVD transfers"
yup... much like old cartoons (found some 4K AI scales of Courage a while back, man they look good!).
if you want HD upgrades, just go grab a torrent and enjoy.
the big studios would probably do a shit job and make changes along the way anyway...

Viewers who enjoy nostalgic standard-definition TV, because the lower resolution preserves the old look and still plays clearly on a large screen.
Fans who want to own the series now, because it was unavailable for purchase for years and the current SD copy is still watchable with clean picture and audio.
People who are fine with a rougher presentation, because the show can still be enjoyable even when the SD image is only decent rather than sharp.
Collectors who want the uncensored episodes, because this release is described as including the unrated footage cut from broadcast versions.
Viewers expecting a sharp HD presentation, because the release is standard definition at 480p and can look bad on modern widescreen TVs.
Shoppers waiting for a future upgrade, because the current purchase may be followed by a higher-resolution version later.
People who dislike long episode openings, because each intro runs about three minutes and can make the show feel annoying to watch.
Fans sensitive to motion smoothing, because the 60 fps presentation can create a soap-opera effect that kills the cinematic vibe.
