The Ryzen 7 5800X3D remains a strong drop in upgrade for existing AM4 and DDR4 systems, especially for gaming. The 3D V Cache is praised for boosting frame rates, improving 1 percent lows, and keeping performance steady even with slower RAM, while older Zen builds and 32GB to 64GB DDR4 rigs get the most value. The main knock is platform age, since similar money can go toward AM5 bundles or a 7500X3D setup with DDR5 and a motherboard. It is a practical fit when you want to extend AM4 life without rebuilding everything.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is a strong drop-in upgrade for existing AM4 users who want to keep DDR4 and avoid paying for DDR5, especially if they are already on 32GB-64GB RAM or hitting CPU limits in games. It is less compelling if you are starting from scratch, since nearby AM5 bundles can cost only about $50 more and include a motherboard plus DDR5.

  • The 7500X3D bundle is about $50 more and includes an AM5 motherboard plus 16GB DDR5, while the 5800X3D keeps you on AM4. The 7500X3D is generally the better gaming buy and avoids locking you into an older platform, while the 5800X3D can still make sense as a drop-in AM4 upgrade.

  • Yes, the X3D cache can deliver large gaming gains, including roughly 18% average uplift in one cited review and up to about 30% in some older titles. The biggest benefit is usually better 1% lows and steadier frame rates rather than just higher average FPS.

  • If you already have a 5600-class CPU, the upgrade is often not worth it unless you are specifically CPU-limited in games or want better 1% lows. For non-gaming use, the jump is much harder to justify.

  • Yes, the X3D cache reduces dependence on fast RAM, so slower DDR4 can have little noticeable impact in many games. That is one reason the chip remains attractive for AM4 systems.

Definitely not garbage, I think you might be confused.
Agreed, not a garbage CPU, only garbage price

To those complaining about how AMD is greedy...Yall read too much fairy tales. These companies are in it for the money, that is the nature of every business. They are not charity organizations that would give you discounted or free items. LOL.

I upgraded from the 5600x when this re-released and well worth it for gaming. For non-gaming uses I wouldn't upgrade. I debated upgrading to AM5 but the current costs of parts doesn't seem the worth and time. AMD announced AM5 will be supported through 2029 so plenty of time to see if prices drop if you don't need the latest and greatest.

The 5800x3d has greatly increased the 1% lows as well. Running 32gb ram and 7800 XT. My fps easily holds steady at 1440p gaming.

I plan on finding used am4 parts and build another PC with my 5600x for light duty gaming as I have an old gtx 1080.

Can't decide between getting this to eek out a few more years out of my 32 gb, 7900xt, 5600x system or sell the mb/ram/mobo to go to am5.. decisions decisions..
If you have microcenter nearby, you can just wait for a good deal on AM5 bundle. Your stuff will still sell well on marketplace. I am also due for refresh, but since mc is opening later this year in the area, I am going to wait.

The anniversary edition is slightly faster than the original 5800x3d. Because it boosts more often. Do to the improved thermals from changing the cache. It's faster than a 7600x3d and about 5% slower than the new 7700x3d.

Trying to delete my comment but there is no button for it.
the major selling point for x3d is more on the lower 1% fps than on avg fps.

It should have been $250 from launch.
They were $450 original launch, and at the time of this launch, they were going for $500 used. Also, these aren't just a factory restart. They're redesigned for better thermals like the AM5 x3d chips.

Thank you.

To anyone who bought x at time y.

Irrelevant. It doesn't matter anymore. The rules are different and computer parts are more expensive with no end in sight.

Just plain wrong comment. Misinformation. They're not redesigned like the ZEN5 X3D package. They were rebuilt slightly different because the fabs are no longer tooled for this specific chip. It's very old tech. HUB just did as re-review of this CPU this morning. Please don't mislead people on the internet. This is a HORRIBLE deal even at S$300. If all you do is gaming and you don't want PCIe5, and AM5 platform longevity, by all means waste $300 on this. On many games even a puny 6-core 9600X (non X3D) beats this CPU by a lot (invest a bit more on a whole new system with a 9600X and upgrade to a ZEN 6 at the end of the year. That's a smart move. On CPU intensive and heavy memory bandwidth games the 5800X3D will beat the 9600X, but not by a lot in most cases. It will also lose to a 6-core 9600X on multi-tasking because of its low clocks and DDR4. At $200 the 5800X3D would be an amazing deal. Let's see what happens in a few month's time.
