Just an FYI: This does the job, but it has a small cooking surface area, so if you're looking to feed more than 3 people, you'll need a larger model. This is fine for taking on a small camping trip etc. Just don't expect it to be useful at the next cookout.
I regularly cook for 4-6 people on my 22" no problem, I dont know what issue you are having.

10 hamburgers and onions/mushrooms sauteed at the same time doesn't seem like bird food to me.

This is good for 1-1 1/2 people . If you want to stay forever there cooking go ahead. The point is to cook something fast in one griddle

I'm less concerned about the surface area and more concerned about the max temperature. Does this one get hot enough compared to the larger Blackstones, particularly for getting a good crust on smash burgers?

The original ones didn't, but the newer ones with the omnivore plate do if you preheat them enough.

The biggest issue I've had with this particular model is the legs are flimsy. Granted it's designed for camping so the lighter materials make sense but if you're looking for a griddle to put on your back deck I would recommend finding a different model.

Can you elaborate more on when this change was made? I bought mine a few years ago and want to know if I have a bad one

The older ones are by no means bad, but the omnivore models have wind guards that trap the heat better. (They also have slightly lower BTU burners, but get hotter anyway).

If yours has no wind guards welded onto the bottom of the griddle, its an older version.

I have the older version for close to 7 years. I got some aftermarket wind guards on Amazon. Worked like a charm. This thing is no slouch. I host 4-5 picnics every summer and I can easily cook for 15-20 people. Obviously not all at one, but in batches it gets the job done. I can cook enough fried rice/stir fry on one sitting enough to fill two half steam foil trays. Easily cooks 12 burger patties. If you're on the fence, get it. You won't be disappointed.

I can and do cook 16 quarter pounders on it at once. Your cookouts and camping trips must be bigger than mine.
