The Monoprice SW-12 is a budget 12 inch powered sub that can deliver strong room shaking bass for basic 2.1 or 5.1 setups, especially at around $180. It is described as a solid price to performance pick, with enough output to free budget for better speakers. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of amp failures, warranty hassles, and some units arriving defective or used. For a tight budget, it offers a lot of bass, but long term support and durability are the tradeoffs.
Common Questions (5)
The amp can fail, and some units have reportedly died within months. Monoprice support has also been described as not selling the amp separately or requiring the whole sub to be sent back, so a failure may mean a difficult repair or replacement.
At around $180, it is framed as strong price-to-performance for a 12-inch, 400-watt RMS sub and even close to the cost of two units versus one RSL 10e. The tradeoff is that some shoppers would spend a bit more on alternatives like the Dayton CS1200 or RSL 10e.
It is described as more than adequate for a basic 2.1 or even 5.1 setup, especially if it frees budget for better speakers. For theater use, though, some prefer stepping up to a 15-inch sub for stronger low-end extension and chest-thumping slam.
Monoprice now sells plate amps individually, which can make repair easier than replacing the whole sub. That said, support has also been reported as unwilling to sell a replacement amp in some cases, so availability may depend on the specific situation.
The auto mode can power off too quickly for TV and movies if the receiver is not sending a constant signal. It can still work fine for music in a stereo setup, but for home theater you may need to adjust the input level or use a splitter cable.

IF the Dayton was a better choice "for a little more", that's around $60(on sale).
"For a little more" the RSL 10e might be the better choice.
If I recall, the RSL 10e is made in China also.
