I've been looking into doing that and here's what I've found so far:

  • The JP eshop version will release 13 hrs before the US eshop version (midnight UTC+9 vs UTC-4)
  • Both the console and this game are region-free and will be in the language chosen in system settings
  • If you want the JP version, you basically have to make one major decision: whether to stick with one single account and switch region, or create a second account just for the JP eshop
  • Your account has a region setting tied to a region's eshop, that you can change on https://accounts.nintendo.com/ but here's the super important part - if you have any remaining eshops funds, it won't let you change the region
  • Your console supports up to 8 separate accounts each with its own region, all accounts can access games from other accounts as long as the virtual cartridges are loaded on the console
  • JP eshop only allows Japanese payment methods, which means if you don't have access to that, and you want to buy things via funds you add via codes as opposed to buying games via codes, you will likely have a very hard time completely emptying the balance, which would sort of lock the account to the region until you get access to a JP payment method that the eshop accepts

Thanks for info! It sounds like a PITA to save $15. I'm sure there are more savings as you buy more games but for me it doesnt seem to be worth the effort.

The JP eshop savings is not significant especially if you have access to discounted US eshop funds, the draw (at least for me) is the earlier release time.

One new thing I found is that the US Nintendo online store now sells a physical eshop gift card - https://www.nintendo.com/us/store...rd-128006/ - which means you now have an option to empty your US eshop funds and switch region temporarily, and as long as you stick to game codes instead of eshop funds codes, you can switch away from the JP eshop.

What I'm planning to do for myself is to keep an eye on which day my $50 Amazon physical copy is going to arrive and decide whether to do the JP eshop on Tuesday or Wednesday to let me play on Wednesday during the day. The physical copy is going to a locker so I have the option to not pick it up.
