If you're just after batteries, you can select the 5 battery pack with no tool and get 4 of the 4.0 and one of the 2.4 batteries for $179

This RYOBI ONE plus starter kit is mainly a battery play, with the free tool often used to drive down the effective cost of the 2.0 Ah and 4.0 Ah batteries. The bundle math can be favorable, especially when the tool is returned or resold, and the charger adds extra value compared with buying batteries alone. The catch is that the promotion is picky about pickup and delivery, often requiring in store pickup and matching store availability, so the workaround can take effort. The 2.0 Ah packs are also seen as lighter for hand tools, while the 4.0 Ah batteries are the more durable option.

Common Questions (4)

Yes. The bundle discount is spread across both items, so returning the tool or batteries can leave the remaining batteries at a much lower effective price. Several shoppers used pickup/return combinations to end up around $40-$55 for the batteries, depending on the tool chosen and tax.

The promotion can require matching pickup options, and some orders fail unless both items use the same store or in-store pickup. A workaround is to choose a tool not stocked at the battery pickup store, or ship the batteries to a store without the tool in stock and pick up the tool elsewhere.

Yes. Picking the most expensive free tool can lower the effective cost of the batteries the most, because the bundle discount is not split evenly. One strategy is to buy the priciest tool available, then return it if you only want the batteries.

The 2.0Ah battery is lighter and better for hand tools, but it has been reported to wear out faster than the 4.0Ah battery. The 4.0Ah pack is described as lasting years without problems, while the 2.0Ah is better when weight matters.

Needing batteries only, did this deal a few weeks ago. Bought the tool / batts via locker pickup. Went immediately to desk to return the tool. Sold the charger for $20. So something like $40 for the batteries.

Set the tool for pickup at a diff store. After you pick up the batteries, just cancel the tool order.

When I purchased, you can't have either item delivered; has to be in store pickup.

I just did it 7/8. Try looking for a tool that is not available at the store where you'll pick up the batteries. Or ship the batteries to a store that doesn't have them in stock and pick up the tool at any other store.

Not the full stand-alone price. If the batteries and tool normally cost $179, $80 dollars is deducted from both items to make the bundle cost $99. The deduction isn't distributed evenly (not $40 off both items).

General rule of thumb: buy the most expensive free tool to return to get the batteries the cheapest. Back when they had the two pack of 4.0 I got the 149 chainsaw and paid 33.50 or something for 2x4.0. was about 100 bucks for 6x 4.0 batteries

This loophole (if it's even that) has been going on since time immemorial. It's the only way to get 1-2 batteries for what they're truly worth. Or some of these low-end tools.
