If you're just after batteries, you can select the 5 battery pack with no tool and get 4 of the 4.0 and one of the 2.4 batteries for $179

This RYOBI ONE plus starter kit is mainly a battery play, with the free tool often used to drive down the effective cost of the 2.0 Ah and 4.0 Ah batteries. The bundle math can be favorable, especially when the tool is returned or resold, and the charger adds extra value compared with buying batteries alone. The catch is that the promotion is picky about pickup and delivery, often requiring in store pickup and matching store availability, so the workaround can take effort. The 2.0 Ah packs are also seen as lighter for hand tools, while the 4.0 Ah batteries are the more durable option.

  • The bundle can work out to a low effective battery cost when the free tool is handled strategically.

  • The 2.0Ah batteries can be useful for lighter hand tools where reduced weight matters.

    therealhustle

  • Some shoppers report saving money by splitting the purchase between home delivery and store pickup.

    LovelyRock8128

  • The deal can be re-used by keeping the batteries and later selecting a different free tool.

    ramenoodles

  • The promotional deal can fail when the tool and batteries do not share the same delivery or pickup options.

    krapnadjaymez619

  • The bundle may require in-store pickup at the same store, and the workaround may stop working after changes.

    mkdenarjaymez619

  • The bundle discount may not be evenly applied across the tool and batteries, making the effective savings harder to estimate.

    jaymez619

  • The 2.0Ah batteries can degrade faster than older NiCad packs, with some lasting less than a year.

If this had a 3/8 impact I would be all over this, do not need any of the free tools offered.

What if I just need the tool cheap and not the batteries? Can I return the batteries and get the tool extremely discounted?

I got a warning about different stores for pickup of the items but could bypass the warning. Then just don't pick up the unwanted item. Refund automatically occurs after a week.

those 2ah batteries are AWFUL. I have been in the 18+ environment since there were blue using the NiCad batteries and these 2ah batteries go bad FASTER than the old NiCad ones did. I have yet had one of those last more than a year, while the 4ah last years without problems.

I ordered the batteries and the 18 inch hedge trimmer for $107 with tax and a few hours later they canceled the hedge trimmer and are sending me the batteries with a refund that will allow me to keep the batteries for $54 total. Is this worth it or should I send the batteries back too?

I'd keep the batteries. If you want some other tool, you can get the deal again and have the four batteries and tool for ~154

I haven't had any of my 2ah batteries go bad, but there is a time a place for them. I love using them with my light power tools since they are much lighter than the 4ah.

Sheesh, wish I had waited for this instead of getting two 4ah batteries for $80 back in the fall, and then having to buy a charger for ~$15 on top of that. Several tools here that I could use.
