1. Black Oxide Bits (The Generalist)
What it is: A standard HSS bit heated to create a dark, porous iron-oxide layer.
How it works: The coating acts like a sponge for cutting lubricant, drastically reducing friction compared to bare, bright steel.
Best for: Everyday utility tasks. Wood, plastics, PVC, carbon steel, and softer non-ferrous metals (like copper or aluminum).
The Catch: The black layer is only a surface treatment. If you sharpen the bit, you grind the oxide layer off the tip, leaving you with bare HSS at the cutting point.
2. Titanium Bits (The High-Speed Wear Minimizer)
What it is: An HSS bit coated with Titanium Nitride (TiN), giving it a distinct gold color.
How it works: Titanium nitride is an incredibly hard ceramic material. It creates an ultra-smooth, slick surface that resists heat and stays sharp up to 6 times longer than standard HSS bits.
Best for: Repetitive production work in sheet metal, iron, wood, and plastic. They run beautifully at high speeds.
The Catch: Just like black oxide, this is a coating. Once the gold tip wears off or gets sharpened away, the underlying bit loses its extra heat and wear resistance.
3. Cobalt Bits (The Hardcore Metal Cutter)
What it is: Not a coating at all. These are solid steel alloys containing 5% to 8% cobalt blended all the way through the metal, giving them a dull, goldish-bronze or matte silver-brown look.
How it works: Cobalt drastically increases the red-hardness of the steel, meaning the bit can get glowing hot without losing its structural rigidity or tempered hardness.
Best for: Tough, abrasive, or hardened metals. If you are drilling through stainless steel, cast iron, titanium, or thick structural welds, this is your only reliable option.
The Catch: Because the cobalt is blended throughout the entire tool, you can sharpen these bits repeatedly and they will cut exactly like they did on day one. However, cobalt makes the steel slightly more brittle, so they can snap easier than standard HSS if you bend or torque the drill mid-cut.
