I picked up the flamed maple natural version of this a few years ago for $65 from this deal: https://slickdeals.net/f/16709312-indio-by-monoprice-boardwalk-flamed-maple-semi-hollow-body-electric-guitar-with-gig-bag-natural-monoprice-com-65-62 , and I was also surprised on how nice it is, even for $130 as long as you don't get a lemon, great value! I had to do some fret work, and a setup to lower the action and put the right relief in the neck... but I have to do that for guitars that cost ten times more, even from sweetwater that supposedly do setups... so...

He thought it was from his use of metal picks (which are somewhat unusual) and from putting them in his mouth, but I remember some doctor officially responding that it was far more likely that his smoking was the cause of his tongue cancer than the metal picks.

I wouldn't give into some sort of panic over exposure to nickel in the strings (as long as you don't have a nickel allergy). If it were dangerous we would see a lot more cases of issues given that many/most electric guitar strings are nickel plated.

Ordered. Thanks for sharing your experience.

My son plays and has been wanting a cheap guitar to learn how to set up a guitar himself and to experiment with changing pickups. Seems like this might be great for that. Too bad I didn't buy the stewmac fret file when it was on sale during prime days!

Yeah, too bad as Stew Mac stuff is rarely on sale, and maybe it is earned, but dang are they proud of their tools $$.

Indio is my fav for modding because they are so low in price but the bones are good, I learned / tried things on Indios before attempting on other guitars. And even if you don't plan to mod, the stuff they come with is usually acceptable to decent for the $. The only risk is the lemon lottery... but then I think that applies to buying any guitar online without trying it first, but Monoprice is easy to deal with for returns so it is worth the gamble for me, and I have won more times than I have lost Smilie. THe downside is I have too many of these Indios, I can't resists when they periodically go on firesale.

Some guitars have a whammy bar. If ones like these don't include it, do you just not get that same effect? I don't really know much about guitars.

What do you mean by "same effect"? The bridge system on these don't use a whammy bar. You'd have to install a Bigsby, or some other system for that

A whammy bar attaches to the strings at the saddle end of the guitar (bottom) and when you push on it, it stretches all the strings to change their sound. It also typically causes the strings to go out of tune faster as the strings are stretched. Retuning is a small price to pay.

On this model of guitar the equivalent whammy bar would be a Bigsby, which replaces the very bottom (tail) piece where the strings start. Even "generic" (licensed) Bigsbys are expensive, and usually cost more than this guitar does. The swap is supposedly easy. My son's Gretsch already has a (licensed) Bigsby on it.

For a traditional stratocaster, the strings end (start?) In an aluminum block in the body of the guitar that is "floating" (held in place by springs on one side, string tension on the other). Moving the strats whammy bar moves the block and stretches the strings.

Edit: you might just look up "bigsby install video" so you can see a guitar before and after.

If you want a guitar for yourself and you need to ask this question, you'd be better with the guitar that doesn't have whammy bar. My first guitar (Gretsch Streamliner) did have a Bigsby and I knew what it was and how it works when I ordered it, thinking that it's just an extra feature, can do no harm. After using the guitar, I wish it had a hard stop tail, like this one has. For a beginner, any vibrato/whammy bar will add more frustration than excitement. Unless, of course, you want to start with playing EVH or Steve Vai songs to begin with, but for this any vibrato, that are installed on semi-hollow guitar, will not do.

I was looking for something cheap to try out that Rocksmith game on PC. Also something that wouldn't go out of tune quickly.
