The Raspberry Pi 400 is a Pi 4 in a keyboard shell that shines for low power tinkering, homelab services, and lightweight Linux tasks. It works well for ad blocking, DNS, dashboards, remote monitoring, basic browsing, retro gaming, and other always on projects, with wide software support and a handy GPIO header. The integrated keyboard is neat for teaching or casual projects, though it is not ideal for everyone. The 4GB RAM and modest CPU limit heavier desktop, media, and emulation use, and it still needs a solid 5V 3A power supply.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is a solid price if you want the Pi 400 form factor, GPIO access, or a low-power tinkering machine, and Micro Center members sometimes see it around $35-$40. For general-purpose computing, a used mini PC or SFF desktop can offer much more performance for similar money.

  • Yes. A 5V/3A (15W) USB power block should work, and a short, higher-current cable helps reduce under-voltage warnings. Some chargers can still trigger undervoltage complaints even when they seem adequate.

  • Yes, it is essentially a Raspberry Pi 4 in a keyboard form factor with GPIO pins. It is not faster than a Pi 4, though the larger passive heatsink and thermals can help it sustain performance better.

  • It works well for low-power always-on tasks like DNS adblocking, Pi-hole, HomeKit emulation, home security software, camera management, dashboards, and lightweight Linux browsing. It is not a strong choice for heavy graphics, 4K YouTube, or Plex transcoding.

  • 4GB is enough for lightweight Linux use, especially with ZRAM and a light desktop or window manager. It can feel cramped for a full graphical desktop, browser-heavy use, or emulation, and the RAM is soldered.

4GB RAM is so 2009. You can't do much with that kind of memory.
The bottleneck on this device is the CPU. It's on par with those Intel Atoms from the 2010's. I have one of these and you can feel it struggling to load a single webpage with just one tab open.

That much RAM with Linux isn't so bad with ZRAM enabled and a light desktop enivonment or just a window manager.

What are people using these for?
For me Streaming. I self host Stremio (Aiostreams) with mine, VPN and pihole. Nvidia Shield pro for the player. Since I just set it up and kind of forget about it i should have maybe not got this keyboard/400 version but this is cheap enough on this deal. I don't use the pi400 for the media player but people do. I think the next gen works better for that. I thought I was going to use it with 3d printer's. Lots of learning type projects for people and children who are in to that. Mine came with a mouse and a project book that I never really looked at.

I guess the integrated keyboard is kinda neat, but also gimmicky. I used to use several SBCs/rpis for homelab type stuff but the market fell off hard. Now you are much better served with something like a used SFF computer from ebay. For example at this price point something like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/358710646877 is going to BTFO the rpi while still being very low power

This isn't really that great. The low RAM makes it not very useful for a graphicsl desktop/browser. I tried using it to emulate some old games with DOSBOX like GTA1 and it struggled even with ARM optimized emulators. If you want to run scripts on a low power device then it's okay, but I had to also patch config files just to make it reliably connect to a cheap TV over HDMI. Recently prices spiked to over $100 for this, but honestly it's meh. A decent concept but too slow. All the cords it comes with are annoyingly short.

I use it to host hermes and openclaw. Since it only has 4gigs of ram and a weak processor, it makes API calls to LLMs to do most of the heavy computing. It works really well and runs 24/7. Also this model is just a pi4 stuffed into a keyboard. It's not faster it's the same pi4 in a different form factor. I never actually use a keyboard with these because raspberry pi makes it so easy to use these headless.

I own 6 of these that i bought over the years whenever i saw them on sale. The first 3 i bought were to gift to kids that showed interest in the IT field. They're great for teaching folks Linux basics. Then, as i got into home automation and dashboards all while the chip shortages a few years ago caused RPis to jump up in price, i watched sales and bought the other 3 since they were cheaper than the regular RPi. I have one with a Spanish keyboard and another with a UK one, which can make typing interesting at times, but i used those as if they were a regular RPi and either manage them remotely or i can plug in another keyboard if needed.

At this price, if you can get one and you want to tinker or have something not resource intensive like say a basic Internet browsing system for kids (or a basic Internet browsing "kiosk" for the family), hosting always on lightweight applications (one of mine used to run my dakboard dashboard, these are a good deal.

Should be able to get one for $8-15 online. Any 5V/3A (15W) USB block should work as well.
Any 5v/3a usb charger, did this change with new models?

It didn't seem to matter what usb charger I tried (apple from a iPad, Samsung, anker), Pi always complained about being under voltage.

Bought a genuine 5.1v Pi wall wart that was so big it covered the neighbor outlets on the power strip, undervolt complaint went away, but frustrating that it could not work with quality usb chargers.

You're so right, I installed Windows 12 alpha on it and it runs like crap, can't even emulate PS5 games or run multiple virtual cloud server instances, what a piece of crap! 🫩

He's not wrong. This would struggle to do anything with a GUI. I bought a 4GB Chromebook when I was moving cross-country to have something to do in-processing for my new job and maybe watch some netflix or something. It was so unbearably useless and slow I took it back the next day.
This is not a Chromebook.

Complaining about under voltage = working. Smilie

More seriously, it's helpful to find a USB charger that provides a voltage that's on the high end of the spec (from 4.75v to 5.25v is all "in spec".) Of course, they don't actually advertise for that, so it's hit and miss unless you can actually measure or ask around.

Also, a short cable and/or a cable meant for higher current works better.
