This 14 inch MacBook Pro pairs the M5 Pro, 48GB of unified memory, and a 1TB SSD for buyers who want strong sustained performance in a portable workstation. The fan cooled chassis is framed as a better fit than the passive cooled MacBook Air for longer workloads, and Wi Fi 7 is supported, though only up to 160 MHz. Pricing context is mixed, with earlier Micro Center and B and H purchases landing lower, and the nano texture display adds $550. It reads as a solid high end upgrade if the current configuration matches your needs.
The deal can be attractive compared with earlier Micro Center pricing before recent price increases.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with a fan can reduce thermal highs during sustained workloads compared with passive-cooled MacBook Air models.
The configuration is described as a binned 16-core CPU and 16-core GPU M5 Pro variant rather than the higher 18/20 variant.
B&H ordering is reported to have worked well for technology and camera equipment, including large business orders.
The claimed $400 savings may be overstated because Apple education pricing and required EDU verification can change the comparison.
Nano-texture adds $550, which can significantly increase the effective cost of the configuration.
The Wi‑Fi 7 capability may be limited to 160 MHz rather than full speed, which can affect wireless performance expectations.
The listed 16/16 CPU/GPU configuration may be incorrect on Apple's site, which could matter if a return requires matching the exact spec.

Deal on a time machine?
I understand the significance of the 48GB RAM. But I haven't been keeping up with Apple stuff over the past year. And I'm about to get into the market for a new Macbook Pro. Am thinking of the 36GB M4 used off ebay.

With the M5 series, you have severe thermal throttling on the "passive cooled" (aka too-cheap-to-install-a-fan) M5 Macbook Air. It's great for casual brief tasks, terrible on anything that's sustained. Just moving to the 14" Macbook Pro w/ M5 (base chip) -- same specs, same cpu, but the MBP has a fan -- gives you an easy 20% performance bump and much lower thermal highs (all the while powering a graphically more intensive screen -- so it's not even a fair comparison with an Air).
Overall, a fan means you're not stressing the machine, since heat is the enemy of electronics.
Folks have also complained about an underwhelming experience at the highest performance side with the M5 Max Macbook Pros. They just don't have the higher end performance improvements over the M5 Pro chipset -- the M5 Pro is the "best bang for the buck". We probably are hitting the upper limits of the M-series without a major redesign and/or seriously improved thermal cooling.

I was stretching it with LM Studio and Draw Things until I got my 5090 box.
