Nothing wrong with pointing out, for those blinded by Apple loyalty, that you're wallet is being drained faster that it would have been a month ago.

A year? ago I recall someone telling me the "M5 Macbook Pro" isn't a high spec machine. Apple deliberately released a potato machine. Was this true? And is this MacBook Pro one of them?

I understand the significance of the 48GB RAM. But I haven't been keeping up with Apple stuff over the past year. And I'm about to get into the market for a new Macbook Pro. Am thinking of the 36GB M4 used off ebay.

Each of the revisions is roughly 20% faster than the previous.

With the M5 series, you have severe thermal throttling on the "passive cooled" (aka too-cheap-to-install-a-fan) M5 Macbook Air. It's great for casual brief tasks, terrible on anything that's sustained. Just moving to the 14" Macbook Pro w/ M5 (base chip) -- same specs, same cpu, but the MBP has a fan -- gives you an easy 20% performance bump and much lower thermal highs (all the while powering a graphically more intensive screen -- so it's not even a fair comparison with an Air).

Overall, a fan means you're not stressing the machine, since heat is the enemy of electronics.

Folks have also complained about an underwhelming experience at the highest performance side with the M5 Max Macbook Pros. They just don't have the higher end performance improvements over the M5 Pro chipset -- the M5 Pro is the "best bang for the buck". We probably are hitting the upper limits of the M-series without a major redesign and/or seriously improved thermal cooling.

bought this exact machine 2 months ago from b&h for 2299. I felt it was expensive at the time...

I was stretching it with LM Studio and Draw Things until I got my 5090 box.

This thing was like $2350 at Microcenter before the price increases.
Even better. That one at Microcenter was unbinned M5 Pro 18C for $2370. Fortunately I secured one on the day of price hike.

Stay away from B&H at all costs. Resist owners who don't deserve your money. Check BBB

I don't buy Apple because it's Apple. When I can get a PC to last more than a year or two, I'll switch. But while my Macs last for 6-8 years, I'll stick with Apple.

"Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple's first touchscreen [tandem OLED] MacBook models are expected to launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. That means the new laptops could arrive before the reported jump to M7 Pro and M7 Max chips." - Trusted Reviews
