I was about to order this for my dad but reviews aren't good. Some say subscription is required, anyone dealt with this?
My parents and I both have this model and don't pay for any subscription. Their software does ask if you want to sign up for one. Very happy with it. We've had them for more than a year, so I'd say it doesn't require one unless Brother released a firmware which is now forcing it (we have auto-firmware updates disabled). We haven't printed enough to need to replace the toner yet so cannot confirm 3rd party toner works even though the research I did before buying the printer said they work.
These printers are very reliable. I have had mine for over 10 years, only gone through a few cartridges (generic ones rated for 2,000+ pages are about $10) and I just had to clean the rollers reciently, and expect it to last another 10 years.
If you have to get a printer... laser is the way to go for cost per page and reliability. I will never buy a inkjet printer again, Even though the "tank" series printers are more resonably priced per page, you have to pay more for the printer

There are other options if you want a better model.
Good point!
if that is true, walmart will get many more returns. there may be a diff between a brother refurb and a walmart "like new" condition. i may take the chance anyway as this can be returned to the store within 30 days of delivery.
edit: return to store is 90 days for this product!

I only buy brother printers. I don't have experience with this model, but if you're a linux user or think you might try linux someday brother is the brand to get.
Sounds like a great deal! Couple questions, please help! Thanks!
1. Do these refurbished ones come with a new cartridge?
2. A couple reviews for the new ones say the cartridge that comes with the printer is a starter one and runs out really fast. Might this be true?
When I bought my printer new years ago it came with a starter toner cartridge. Good for about 600 pages as best as I can recall.
From Brother/Office Depot review: We apologize for the difficulties you've encountered. The Brother HL-L2405W includes a starter toner cartridge with a yield of approximately 700 pages.
New: Carton Contents‡ Brother HL-L2405W, Starter Black Toner Cartridge (700 pages‡), DR830 Drum Unit (15,000 pages‡), AC Power Cord, Product Safety Guide, Reference Guide, Warranty Card, Quick Setup Guide https://www.brother-usa.com/p/las...d=HLL2405W

3rd party toner cartridges are super common on Amazon. I'm sure they vary in quality, but they're like 1/5th Brother price.
