The corporate profit strategy has clearly proven to be that these companies start out open-source and "tolerating" local storage onto flash media for full functionality that's equivalent to their for-fee cloud services; and then slowly chip away at such basic capabilities, dumping ads on top, and extorting subscriptions that used to be unnecessary or not worth it. Yi is a Chinese brand that is the exemplar of this greed and self-destruction (because now everybody hates them). Wyze is mid-way down that path; Tapo will follow eventually. I'm so cynical by now that I'm thinking of just investing in Google Nest products since I'm in the paid Google Home Premium ecosystem anyway (because it's included with my Google AI Pro plan). In other words: "they're eventually going to charge you anyway..."

Wyze severely disables your cameras if you cancel your subscription. Yi started out good, but then required a subscription or they would infest you with adds.
