This is a citric acid based toilet tank cleaner that works well for mineral buildup, scale, and light film inside the tank. It is especially useful for well water and for keeping push button toilet parts from sticking, with the tank looking nearly new after use. The price is also described as good compared with buying citric acid in bulk or using vinegar. It does not remove rust, and there are cautions about possible wear on flappers or other tank parts, so it is best for routine tank cleaning rather than heavy rust removal.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is not likely to harm pipes, but it may be tough on the flapper and other tank components. It is also noted as unnecessary for many toilets, and septic use is a separate concern.

  • It is essentially citric acid powder with other ingredients. It can be substituted with white vinegar, but the product is described as smelling less than vinegar and costing less than buying a couple gallons of it.

  • It removes scale and mineral buildup, but not rust. For iron stains, Iron Out is the better match and can be left to sit before flushing.

  • It can help keep push-button toilet internals from sticking when mineral buildup is the problem, and it can leave the tank looking nearly new. It is also used every few years for mildew around the evaporation ring and film on tank hardware.

  • Turn off the water supply, flush, add the cleaner, then fill the tank with warm water and let it sit about an hour. Warm water is recommended, not boiling water, because boiling water can crack porcelain.

The simplest way to clean the toilet tank is to use citric acid powder (yes it is also a cooking ingredient) and warm water. Do NOT use hot boiling water. It will crack porcelain. Turn off supply water. Flush. Pour a cup of citric acid powder. Pour warm water to fill the tank. Wait an hour. It will clean the tank amd repeat twice if there are tough stains. This cleans but doesn't prevent like the product mentioned here.

But what if house guests look in my tank? I have a reputation to uphold.
if iron is the problem, then Iron Out is your friend. let it sit for a while and flush.

Sounds less far less "simple" and expensive than $3 here. $8 for "citric acid powder" or $2.64 for this?

Personal experience, I have well water and this product works great for keeping my push button toilets operating well (internals not sticking due to mineral build up). Inside of tank looks basically new after using as well. I guess I could do the simple method of many steps, non standard ingredients, heating water, needlessly turning off supply lines, etc...or just pour this in at night and flush in the morning. Can't decide Wink

I like using a soft pumice stone. Cleans everything right up, no matter what it is. I tried all sorts of chemicals on my hard water toilet stains, nothing worked very well. A pumice stone is the key.

Nice. In for 3.

I got a big bag of citric acid, but I'd rather save it for making Jeffrey Morgenthaler's tonic syrup for my summer gin & tonics. Priorities...
