I bought this under Wirecutter's previous recommendation in December 2024 and there's definitely been issues with the quality control.
I even reviewed it on Costco.com with pictures to show exactly what I mean.
First one came with broken plastic bits in the shredder head and the basket warps when the shredder head is attached.
Got a replacement from them with the same issue where the basket warps when the shredder head is attached.
Went to the local warehouse to check the model they have on display and they had the same issue where the basket cant support the weight of the shredder head.
A few months later on a road trip to another state, I stopped by two more Costco (one in Delaware, one in Virginia) both on display also had the exact same issue.
Late 2025, I flew out to Colorado for a trip and stopped in the Costco in Colorado Springs to pick up some snacks and also saw the shredder on display also had the same issue.
Yes, people can form their own opinion and my experience is anecdotal, but if you check the reviews on Costco.com, its not an isolated issue. There's some glaring quality control issue that Royal hasn't addressed.

This one seems to have become junk from all the reviews. Even Wirecutter 2026 said so. Why is anyone buying?

The Royal 14MC 14-Sheet Micro Cut Paper Shredder is a former top pick and a Costco exclusive. A new unit we ordered during our latest round of testing arrived cracked in multiple places, which mirrored the experience many recent buyers have reported in reviews. Both Costco and Royal customer service and manufacturer representatives were nonresponsive to our inquiries. Our own experience, plus other customer reports of cracked frames and frayed electrical cords, has led us to suspect a collapse in Royal's quality control.
I don't have a costco so I picked up this one from Sam's Club. I'm just a home user so I don't shred a bunch of sheets at one time though. It also has a fan for the motor which is good. Not sure if it goes on sale or not.

A 4.4 star rating on Costco isn't junk, and sighting Wirecutter as a source for review is laughable. I've had this shredder in my office and home, and it works just fine for both applications. If you over stuff it (more than than the specified 14 sheets), or abuse it, sure it'll bog down, but that's EXACTLY why they have a specification. For our use case these have been dependable, and a good fit, at a great price. At $65, it's a no brainer IMO.
Just threw away similar Royal. Not the same model, but very similar and I'm pretty sure also from Costco.
Despite regular oil it was barely cutting, and later not even cutting a single sheet before getting hot and stopping.
It didn't last anywhere near as long as previous shredders I've owned.
I've been using this for over a year now and it is a solid little shredder. It can get jammed if you abuse it with super thick junk mail letter using thicker card stock paper, but otherwise it will shred things just fine. Definitely good enough for most home users and easy to recommend with Costco's return policy should anything become an issue.
My order came in a week ago with no issues. The basket that holds the heavy shredder head has no cracks and supports it perfectly fine. Time will tell if this holds up, but so far so good.

Mine works fine. It does what I need it to do. Shred things well and not make a mess. I didn't notice any cracks, but didn't look too hard for it either. If it's just for home use, no need to overthink it.
i have this one, once i saw first hand what plastic toys all the noname shredders are like on amazon. i highly recommend it for the price. the plastic case is rigid but kind of brittle, so inspect what you get carefully for cracked pieces from s&h. my typical shred are fake credit card junk mail envelops, which i shred still sealed side by side two at at time (yes, i know about the website to block them). i like that this model can handle staples, so i need not worry about one inside somewhere. i don't shred cd/dvd i just cut their radius using a poultry sheer (while in a big plastic bag in case it shards).

I can't believe I'm considering buying another paper shredder! Got rid of the last one years ago, but since I retired 2 years ago, I can't just take my shredding to work w/ me any more and do it on the (robust!) office machine any more...
