This Royal 14 sheet micro cut shredder is best for steady home use, with small cuts, decent quietness, and enough power for paper, credit cards, staples, and even some cardboard. It has held up for months or years in several homes and offices, and the motor fan and Costco return policy add some peace of mind. The main concern is quality control, with reports of cracked plastic, warped baskets, and a brittle case that should be checked on arrival. It can also bog down or jam if overloaded, and speed is its biggest weakness.

  • Home offices shredding regular paperwork and credit cards, because it handles multiple sheets and credit cards without issues.

  • Households that shred a few sheets at a time, because it runs fine for light home use and stays dependable when not overloaded.

  • People shredding staples and sealed junk mail, because the cutting mechanism handles staples and can take junk mail two at a time.

  • Busy home users wanting a quiet micro-cut shredder, because it makes small cuts and runs fairly quietly.

  • Shoppers who need a ruggedly built unit for rough handling, because the plastic case can be brittle and quality control issues include cracked parts and warped baskets.

  • People who need fast shredding of large paper stacks, because it bogs down when overloaded beyond its sheet limit.

  • Users feeding thick junk mail or heavy card stock, because it can jam when pushed with thicker material.

  • People who want a large bin that is easy to bag, because the bin is small and its protrusions can puncture bags.

This has a "62" score on consumer reports and its biggest critique was speed. It is CR recommended and very well reviewed.

It's not that bad...got it as a gift.
Pros (compared to a heavy duty Fellowes cross-cut shredder):
  • nice small cuts
  • fairly quiet
Cons: not as fast, small bin, bin has a lot of weird protrusions so it'll puncture bags. and there's some foam on the bottom that will probably disintegrate in a few years so it's definitely not as well built as a Fellowes...

but it has a Costco warranty so can probably be returned when it dies...

This took much too long to happen. I waited SO LONG for this to be on sale and bought anyways after a year of waiting.

Bought ours at full price $79.99 back in 2023. It has worked very well for regular home use and been holding up just fine; no issue with the basket or shredder head. We don't move it around so didn't attach the casters. I haven't seen it on sale since our purchase. Definitely a good buy at $65 with free shipping!

A 4.4 star rating on Costco isn't junk, and sighting Wirecutter as a source for review is laughable. I've had this shredder in my office and home, and it works just fine for both applications. If you over stuff it (more than than the specified 14 sheets), or abuse it, sure it'll bog down, but that's EXACTLY why they have a specification. For our use case these have been dependable, and a good fit, at a great price. At $65, it's a no brainer IMO.
Sort by Most Recent and it's like a 2 star rating the first few pages. Recent scores are definitely junk.

I've been using this for over a year now and it is a solid little shredder. It can get jammed if you abuse it with super thick junk mail letter using thicker card stock paper, but otherwise it will shred things just fine. Definitely good enough for most home users and easy to recommend with Costco's return policy should anything become an issue.
I bet Costco is clearing out stock. I can't imagine with recent reviews they'll continue to sell it. This sale has already been extended to 8/2, hallmark of a clear-out price reduction. When it's a real sale they sometimes sell out before the sale even ends.

I've had this thing for two years and I abuse the hell out of it by shredding cardboard boxes and it continues to work despite that. Probably not as bad as large stacks of paper though?

Been looking at this for a while now. Unfortunately, recent reviews and Wirecutter say QC have plummeted. So much for an affordable 12+ sheet micro cut shredder

Received the shredder a week ago and the unit works very well. No bulging on the sides and the bin looks fine. It makes me want to shred everything! 😜

My old shredder gave away today and I was wondering how often this goes on sale?
