I even reviewed it on Costco.com with pictures to show exactly what I mean.
First one came with broken plastic bits in the shredder head and the basket warps when the shredder head is attached.
Got a replacement from them with the same issue where the basket warps when the shredder head is attached.
Went to the local warehouse to check the model they have on display and they had the same issue where the basket cant support the weight of the shredder head.
A few months later on a road trip to another state, I stopped by two more Costco (one in Delaware, one in Virginia) both on display also had the exact same issue.
Late 2025, I flew out to Colorado for a trip and stopped in the Costco in Colorado Springs to pick up some snacks and also saw the shredder on display also had the same issue.
Yes, people can form their own opinion and my experience is anecdotal, but if you check the reviews on Costco.com, its not an isolated issue. There's some glaring quality control issue that Royal hasn't addressed.

This Royal 14 sheet micro cut shredder is best for steady home use, with small cuts, decent quietness, and enough power for paper, credit cards, staples, and even some cardboard. It has held up for months or years in several homes and offices, and the motor fan and Costco return policy add some peace of mind. The main concern is quality control, with reports of cracked plastic, warped baskets, and a brittle case that should be checked on arrival. It can also bog down or jam if overloaded, and speed is its biggest weakness.
Common Questions (4)
Yes. It has worked well for regular home use for months to over two years in multiple reports, including multiple sheets, credit cards, staples, and even cardboard boxes. It is best kept within its 14-sheet limit and can bog down or jam if overloaded or fed very thick junk mail or card stock.
Some units arrive with cracked or broken plastic parts, and the basket can warp under the shredder head on certain examples. Other units have arrived with no cracks and have held up well, so inspecting the case and basket on delivery is important.
It is fairly quiet, but speed is its main weakness. It shreds into small micro-cut pieces, yet it is slower than a heavy-duty Fellowes cross-cut shredder and can feel sluggish if you expect high throughput.
Yes. It can handle staples without needing to remove them first, and it has been used successfully for credit cards and sealed junk-mail envelopes. It does not shred CDs/DVDs; those were only cut separately with another tool.

Pros (compared to a heavy duty Fellowes cross-cut shredder):
- nice small cuts
- fairly quiet
Cons: not as fast, small bin, bin has a lot of weird protrusions so it'll puncture bags. and there's some foam on the bottom that will probably disintegrate in a few years so it's definitely not as well built as a Fellowes...but it has a Costco warranty so can probably be returned when it dies...
