The confederates ended up abandoning the fort because the stench and bugs from the bodies became unbearable. Most of the fort(which was an earth fort, which was why it was so hard for the union to destroy it with naval guns) is mostly under water now but parts of it are still there albeit it's just sand now.
Really good movie. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman were amazing in it.

Watched this is Charleston History in high school and the teacher said it was inaccurate and the water was on the other side.

remember watching this when it came out on VHS and at the time I had to stop watching because the battle scenes were too violent for me. I doubt that would be a problem 35 years on.
