Then you can recycle all your old iPads (even iPad 2s sometimes!). I have 6 photo frames all networked together in an isolated AppleiD. Work office 1, work office 2, home, parent's living room, home living room. All networked together via iCloud Shared album . Compatible with photos, live photos, videos. Dev is very engaged, super cool and it's getting updates.
It also now compatible with Immich! Highly, highly recommended. Worth every penny for lifetime price.

Agree with the comment above that you might want to keep it offline if you have an old Android.
That will matter in the long term.
Ipads also do not look like picture frames. Your old (possibly scratched) iPad is also very likely far more valuable as a repurposable device, than to just delegate it to showing pictures. It will also have an ugly charging cable sticking out of the side.
Anyones old iPad is also not 15.6". These frames in smaller sizes go for as low as $20 (I have gotten 3 10" for $20 each, 3 different times from 3 different sellers)
The potential for tinkering with these devices is also as limitless as android, you can essentially run anything on it, as it comes rooted.
So the iPad solution might work for very specific people, who have a bunch of old ipads collecting dust, all of which iPads are not scratched or cracked, and are willing to display a plugged in iPad instead of a picture frame. And are willing to purchase a subscription to a volatile app that may not exist forever.
But for most people, getting these self contained frames is probably the best idea.

Can confirm it works. I went with immich Kiosk - which for some reason wouldnt work without having immich frame on it first for some odd reason - not sure if Kiosk can be set as home screen? I was having odd issues with the latest immich frame as well and ended up grabbing a random old version - v42 and that one worked perfect (v50 was constantly crashing, figure it was just too new for android 8). It is now booting into immich with frameo disabled.
