I buy 2 or 3 of these on sale because they are great for hobbies, first aid kits, road-side tool kits, organizing loose parts, sewing kits . So much better than shoe boxes , bins , drawers . Keep a spare one handy and it will fill up within a few weeks

How well do these keep small items separated? I was thinking of using this as a re-keying kit. The top tray would store tiny little cylinders for rekeying locks.

Are you talking about the cylinders or are you talking about the pins? If you were talking about the pins and are trying to keep them separated and organized, this won't work well. Your key pins will end up all mixed together.

I considered that the second I saw this even though I'd hate having to dump all the included tackle somewhere. I'd probably pick up a couple of I hadn't just picked up several harbor freight bin cases to customize.

They work fine for that. My only complaint with budget tackle boxes is the "yard sale" feature , since the handle is attached to the top and not the bottom, if it's not closed, you get an involuntary yard sale. But still a great buy.

I like to buy these for those kinds of things and then I have a file cabinet drawer I keep it in for organization.
You lose the large storage compared to the tackle box but it's great for all the small stuff. I use it for hobbies, random cable organization, small computer stuff like sd cards, USB drives, etc.

Great tip I like those too. Great for small parts and for disassembling complex machines. I put little flags on each bin with the assembly order
