Excellent tool. Works perfectly. I use painter's tape to protect the side of the neck and fretboard but it's designed to minimize any damage to a guitar. Fixes both fret sprout and sharp fret ends from the factory. Love it, used it on all my guitars and basses. Zero problems. Necks feel so much better it's awesome.

Stewmac and a lot of others post videos on YouTube about fret dressing, if you want to take care.

Great deal, have one, but might buy another one because it is useful for other things that require a very small and delicate file as well. Looking forward to seeing what else is available. Stu Mac has great stuff

The fret end file is a great tool that I use several times a week fixing customer's guitars.

In the winter, when frets tend to stick out from the fretboard, is the best time to file off the sharp edges...but sometimes even in the summer (or anytime with a new guitar) you get a fret that sprouts and has to be knocked down.

Couldn't you just use a similar sized, fine grit file from a hardware store that's a fraction of the price of this?

If you tape the board and you're careful, probably. I doubt every tech uses this specific tool.

This fret end file has intentionally smooth side with slightly rounded corners to protect your fretboard while you are filing. $13 felt like a great price to me. I've been impressed with every StewMac tool I have, but I've always bought them on sale.
