Google Nest Programmable Smart WiFi Thermostat is the cheaper, non learning Nest line, aimed at basic app controlled heating and cooling rather than the fuller Nest experience. It is described as lacking the rotating ring, front screen, sensor compatibility, and automatic schedule learning, while still offering automatic away detection and a more intuitive feel than Ecobee for some setups. The main drawbacks are reports of connection problems, occasional malfunctions, and a shared Heat and Cool schedule that can be awkward in places with big seasonal swings. A practical pick if you want a simpler Nest and do not need sensors or advanced automation.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. Local power or gas providers often offer free or heavily discounted smart thermostats, and some customers have gotten Honeywell or Nest units for far less than retail. It can be worth checking utility rebates before paying Amazon pricing.

  • No. This model is the non-learning version, so it does not build a schedule around your manual adjustments over time. It also lacks the rotating ring, front screen, and Nest temperature monitor compatibility found on other Nest generations.

  • No, this line does not connect to Nest temperature monitors or additional sensors. That makes it a poor fit if you rely on room sensors for temperature balancing or occupancy-based control.

  • Yes, Nest can automatically detect when the home is empty and switch to Away mode without manual setup. That behavior is cited as more intuitive than ecobee's away settings, which may require adding a vacation or away schedule manually.

  • It is designed around Heat+Cool mode and uses one shared schedule across modes with a required temperature buffer. That can be inconvenient if you want independent heat and cool schedules for seasonal swings.

I got this from the power company, and it's a bunch of BS

The cost savings over a manual one is minimal at best, and the "energy savings" was also a big smoke screen if you ask me, even accounting for higher rates

Heck, I got so fed up with it, that I put back the manual one, and I am nest free again

Argh! I miss my nest FrownI had a 2nd gen nest that they were ending support with, and I was frustrated with a few things about it, so I decided to try ecobee based on a recommendation from a trusted friend.I regret trusting him.I got the "smart premium" model, and it's not smart at all.My nest could detect when I was out of the house for an extended period of time and would change to away mode until I got back. The Ecobee cannot. My nest would adjust my schedule based on my behaviors - didn't always get it right, but it would try. My ecobee claims to make suggestions based on my behavior, but in the year I've had it, it hasn't made a single recommendation (and that's not because I've set a perfect schedule that never needs adjusting). And the ecobee thinks the temp is ~4 degrees lower than it is if my ceiling fan is on. My nest never had that issue.
Never had any issues with my ecobee other then the Alexa builtin being worthless. Plus it does have away mode. Which model did you have?

"smart thermostat premium"

After I went away for a few weeks last year and realized it doesn't go into away mode automatically, I was informed there's a "vacation" mode I need to enable if I'm going to be away for an extended period of time. My nest didn't have a vacation mode, it just realized no one's home and automatically switched to "Away" mode to save energy. There's an "away" comfort zone setting for ecobee, but it doesn't kick in automatically - as far as i can tell, it only takes effect if you manually add it to your schedule, like if you're away at work M-F, not automatically.

Having used both, the nest is just more intuitive.

They're great when they work. Unfortunately that's not all of the time.

I have the Nest E thermostat, it kept setting scheduled temperature changes I didn't ask for (and no it wasn't the opt-in thing where your power company can change it during high demand periods). After weeks of deleting schedules and disable and re-disabling any automatic change, it finally stopped changing the temperature, and then the battery started going low and needed to be recharged with a phone charger every few weeks.

Fortunately I was able to get Google support to send me a replacement, which now works perfectly.

is this the latest one? can't tell
This is not a good deal. I have a third generation. It's the old clunky one, and it's learning. This is the non-learning version. Have to spend a little bit more for smartness; otherwise, get the old third generation. Unfortunately, it's expired
